Referees removed from game

My guess in this situation … Mizzou was penalized and was kicking off from the 20. Since that was the same area as a post-safety free kick (where punting is allowed), some people got it in their heads that it was the same thing, so they went with the punt option.

It seems incredible to me that the Mizzou staff would be so devious as to do this intentionally while knowing it was illegal; seems like just a misinterpretation because they were kicking from the 20. But, coaches can be extra-devious in getting around the rules, so maybe … (Speaking of which, did you know there’s still a rule on the books requiring knee pads that actually cover the knees for all players? Given the epidemic of shorts being worn by players nowadays, I bet you didn’t).

Given all that, though, it’s inexcusable for the officials to allow a punt on a post-score kickoff situation where it is explicitly not allowed.

Also, no stomach exposed, no back plate exposed, and no loose undershirt exposed below the jersey. I think they have given up trying to enforce this.

Maybe this shi* would stop if after an obvious bone headed call the referee crews cell phone numbers and emails would be allowed to be posted on the scoreboard.

Yeah, those guys who make a few thousand a game (not bad in D1, TERRIBLE every level below that) should be berated via phone after every screw-up. That would help the shortage in that occupation.

I think it's allowed only after a safety.
Speaking of safety. Wonder why the crew also didn't get in trouble for allowing the Mizzou player to punch the ball back into the endzone on Daniel's fumble. It looked pretty clear, so not sure how back judge missed.

Not sure what the ruling would have been if called. Mizzou gets at point of batting? Or would KU have kept?

It does. Drop kicks and punts are not the same. Drop kick has to hit the ground first.
When I was a freshman in high school we had a kid on our freshman team who learned to drop kick from his grandpa. He asked the coach if he could try it in a game for an extra point or short FG. The coach said if we ever got far enough ahead he would let him try it. Of course the coach never thought we were far enough ahead. :-(

It has got to be a little weird to learn if you know how to punt since the timing of the drop has to be all different.

The drop is different too. You can’t have a weird bounce otherwise it’s never going to work

10 yard penalty from the spot of the foul. KU keeps the ball. Rule 9-4-1c

This whole thing is very weird. They line up for a kickoff and the guy just punts it instead and nobody says anything? There has to be some clips of this floating around right?

football should just be like basketball where refs are not tied to conferences. I am not one for conspiracies, but Saturday sure felt like big ten refs helping the big ten team.
This allows conferences to pay the refs. Which in turn allows the conferences to dictate the payment amount. Which in turn gives the opportunity to influence the them.

The downside to that is if you’re not a big game on a given weekend and you’re not Big10/SEC, you get the dregs. We’ve seen some legitimately terrible basketball crews in the last few years.

Football too, I suppose.

I think Doug Flutie drop-kicked an XP once. Can’t remember if it was for BC or in the NFL.

Isn't that the current issue with cfb right now? all the good crews are moving to the SEC/B10. IIRC the whole refing controverisy in last year's Utah vs BYU came from a crew that was fired by the Pac12 for being terrible only to be hired by the big 12.

I would argue going forward, Big 10 is going to have mostly crap match ups outside of their top 4 teams each season. Already this year it looks like FOX is loading up on big 12 prime time games because our games are more exciting than a Minnesota-Northwestern game.

In theory the big 12 due to parity will be the big match ups becasue we don't have bluebloods pounding bottom feeders every week.

The full replay is on Youtube. I set this to start when Missouri scored. Then there was an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the play and a blocked XP.

I haven’t reffed much and honestly these guys should be held to a higher standard, but I’ve been in a situation where a team/player has done something really weird, and in fact it was so weird I just sort of assumed it was right.

Yeah, you’re right. But I have no idea if removing conference affiliation would make it better or worse. Maybe refs would tilt towards the big dogs even more to curry favor with the big money conferences/networks. Maybe it would be better. I feel like there would be significant unintended consequences, though.

as @AllInForISU pointed out. I think Mizzou was punting for the hangtime to prevent KU from returning it well. If you can't get a touchback might as well try something that will let your team get down there before they return.

I missed it though since i was still on my way back from the Cyhawk game.
Also, on a kickoff it's a free ball. Unless the receiving team fair catches the ball, its anyone's once it has traveled the 10 yards.
