RECRUITING: A few notes on 2018 PG Tyler Harris

Harris and Conditt would be a great start to this class. This may explain the quick commitment by Lathon, maybe he was told that Iowa State planned to pursue Harris even if he committed.
Or maybe he just liked NW better.

There is an element of recruiting that many of us wouldn't understand, or have a heavy bias of, and that's how a school feels. Sometimes we complicate the recruiting process too much. Some kids just click with different schools and for different reasons.

I think people also don't realize how much other schools have to offer, because they went to Iowa State and have a huge bias towards that. Iowa State is awesome, but so are about 100 other universities. The one advantage we have over MOST schools is our atmosphere at home games, but a lot of players simply don't care about that when choosing a school, or don't get the chance to see it because of their visit schedule.

My contacts in Waterloo/Cedar Falls say ISU has a chance with Green, but UNI still the clear leader
Are these contacts in the Green camp or from the Uni camp point of view?

If I was Green's Dad I would almost feel guilty letting him go to UNI. Not because UNI isn't worthy or anything but I'd want my kid to play against the best competition possible if he was at that level.

Speaking as a father...coaching your son/playing for your Dad would be pretty damn cool though. Assuming they like each other. :)

It's pretty hard to believe UNI is the "clear leader", if that's true there was never a chance.

Most every kid dreams of playing top level games.

Playing at Loyola in January in front of nobody doesn't fit.

Not that big of an outlier. We were involved with 2 other kids that were released after signing too. Parker Stewart and Garrison Brooks. That's 3 guys we wlhad ties to that backed out of signed LOIs. Its not as uncommon as it should be.

They both had coaching changes didn't they? Again, extremely rare for a kid to leave a LOI without there being a staff change.

I would actually encourage my kid to go play somewhere else. Part of going off to college is about leaving home and getting out on your own. How can you do that when you are always around your parent?

But I can certainly understand playing for your dad. In some ways, he probably feels pressure to.

Neither Ole Miss or Mississippi State had a coaching change actually. It is pretty rare though to ask out of an LOI without any changes to the program after being committed for 8 months.

Iowa State will have giant shoes to fill next season thanks to the graduation of Monte Morris, its star lead guard who taken in last week’s NBA Draft. Thankfully for Steve Prohm, the Cyclones will welcome Lindell Wigginton to campus, a five-star 2017 guard that will likely be one of the more productive freshmen nationally next year.

While Wigginton is more than capable of running the team at the one, ISU will need to find more of a facilitating option in the 2018 class. It will also lose Donovan Jackson to graduation, but it has made great strides in recent weeks with some of the top point guard prospects throughout their region.

Tyler Harris is the most talked about name with ISU as the 5-foot-9 lead guard is a quick and fiery competitor that loves to push the pace. The issue is that he is more of a scoring primary guard, though his fearlessness and consistency remains a strong suit as he continues to develop into a playmaker; Wichita State, Ole Miss and ISU remain the likely landing spots for him.

AJ Green, a top-100 guard in the 2018 class, visited Ames earlier this month and the Cyclones sit firmly in the mix for him. However, Green’s father, Kyle, is an assistant on staff at Northern Iowa. A commitment to anyone but UNI would be a bit of surprise.

If either were to commit to Iowa State, it would more than likely be Harris, a guard that could team up with Wigginton and create a dynamic and super competitive backcourt for years to come.

Nice handle, quick release with long range would lead to some big games, sprinkle a dunk or two for good measure.

Harris would bring some magic in Hilton.

Wow, practically all of those 3s were from NBA range and beyond. Kid was lighting it up. It was the game of his life, but a shooter who can get hot like that and extend his range can more than make up for a height issue.
