Proximity is something, but all the head coaches still in it are gonna be taking private planes when they want to go watch him. It's not a big deal if one coach is a state or two further away... That's another 40 mins of flight time, and if they're making the trip, it's not like they have other things planned for that particular night.

I doubt Calipari even needs to cheat anymore. He was born to be a salesman to teenagers and can legitimately sell both playing time AND a chance to win a NC. He also has a solid track record of getting his one-and-dones paid. By the NBA.

If I was a 5 star recruit, Cal wouldn't need to cheat or pay for me to go to UK. I would get to play with other guys who have NBA talent. Be treated as a god on campus. Conference championships. National championships. Obviously last year didn't work but Cal has been in the Final Four 3 of his 5 years at UK if i remember right. Not bad. All it takes is for guys with desire and drive like the Anthony Davis team to have a dpecial season. Who wouldn't want to go there?

You would be treated as a god while on campus. Then when you left you would be forgot about unless you were a Hall of Fame NBA player. See Harrison barnes. You come to ISU and dominate. You get the "Treated like a God" treatment. Then you leave and still get treated that way when you come back.

I agree with you. Never could figure out why some kids just want to go to another place and just be another player when they could go elsewhere where fans would be grateful long after they leave. But I guess thats why we are ISU fans and not Kentucky fans.

Exactly how I expect Royce will be treated when he plays tonight!

I get all that, I really do. But for a player who wants to elevate his game, does being around exceptional players and beating down much worse teams really achieve that? Or would you rather be on a good team that plays exceptional teams and have to opportunity to compete against that talent. Bottom line is, Calipari get's what he wants at least 75% of the time. If RV buys into the hype and personal relationships that go back years can so easily be disregarded, the good luck and godspeed to him. You really only want players who want to be here. I hope he wants to be here when the time comes to choose.

Some kids buy into the whole Cal thing. He gets kids to believe he can make them top picks when in reality guys like Anthony Davis, John Wall, Derrick Rose etc are going to get picked high regardless of where they go. Look at Anthony Bennett.

To be honest I'm guessing most kids (speaking top-level talent here) don't give a crap what they're going to be "seen as" in the long term at a particular school or by its fans. They want to play with the best players, improve their draft status, and go cash a big paycheck in the NBA.

As they should. Anyone who is going to make their living from playing basketball should be looking at what college will improve their game the most, get them prepared for the next level, and get them drafted the highest. Exactly how non-athletes should be choosing a school as well.

ESPN Insider article, but they had good things to say about Abu and Cheick Diallo (2015) as both being good hustle guys. Would love to see us land Abu. Also basically says Vaughn is a scoring machine that is completely awesome, which I believe everyone is aware of.

2013 LeBron James Skills Academy: What we learned - ESPN

Also on Recruiting front page, Jaylen Johnson got a lot of love in another article.

They practice against elite talent a lot by going to UK too which would help improve their game.

Fair point. And lets face it, it's far better to win than lose. If you can maximize your wins by surrounding yourself with OAD players, it is what it is.

I think there are players that know this and that's the route they want to take and there are players that want to be a big fish in a small pond. Probably just all depends on your personal preference but it's hard to fault a kid to go somewhere and try to win a national championship.

The guy does the best job of getting his players into the NBA. They know that he will do whatever he can to get them an opportunity.

Saban does the same thing for football

This is the biggest fallacy regarding CBB out there right now. He currently gets the best players, therefore they are picked high. Anthony Davis would have gone #1 no matter where he went to school; that was not a good draft and there was zero debate. Same with Wall; 2010 was a terrible draft and there was no debate on who was going #1. Derrick Rose would have gone no lower than 3 no matter where he went. The only player in recent memory that may have really benefited from Cal/Kentucky getting the drafted higher was maybe MKG, but again this was mostly due to the poor draft.

Edit: Maybe Daniel Orton as well.

Most kentucky players would go top 5 if they played at northwestern, nebraska, or kentucky. Its not calipari. Its the talent.
