I'm late to the party here but CW's pod from Sunday saying Yormark wants to beef up a basketball league with hoops-only schools and sell the rights separately seems like a really smart bet. The sticking point will be if we can get Big East schools to jump. The other side of that strategy is that it must be attractive to Arizona in particular. I am curious whether the Big 12 would consider an all sports membership for UConn to pry them away and get the ball rolling. I think their football has to improve a bit on viewership first though.

But didn't we just ink a combined football and basketball deal? So the next opportunity to sell basketball separately would be that next deal years away? I can't imagine adding schools now for the long play on that.

15 months until the deal expires, but they almost certainly have to be doing budgeting for 24-25 earlier than that. Has to be hard to do major projects as well both for budgeting reasons and also for any time theyd want to finance those projects with debt
The saving grace is the money bump schools should get when the playoff expands to 12 teams for the 24/25 fiscal and then the next bump in 26/27 when the 12 team playoff rights go out to open market.

But Pac12 schools will have to be on the right side of the gravy train- Power vs. Group conference.

Must be hoping for some really weird turn of events that leaves some of these platforms with cash to burn.
If your President at Oregon, Washington, Stanford, etc. what's the hurry?

Slow play it and see if Big10 realignment attitude changes with new commissioner.

I guess the main risk is if possible TV partners are in a hurry. I wouldn't think Amazon, Apple, CW, etc. are too concerned if deal is done in May or August.

The speculation is BY would do now as proof of concept. Create the value proposition over the next 6 years.

But to your point, BY would need ESPN and Fox to increase extension investment so that adding Gonzaga, etc. isn't dilutive to current 12 schools.

With the current media deal running out on June 30, 2024, at some point the conference will be stuck with whatever deal they can get for at least one year.

For at least a year, but a new deal would likely require all 10 to sign a new GOR for the duration. It seems unlikely a media partner would be okay with signing a new deal only to have schools bolt after 1 year.

If nobody's moved by late June/early July, I'm guessing there won't be any more movement this cycle. Even if the PAC hasn't signed a new deal, the schools will pretty much be committed to signing whatever deal they can get at that point and riding it out together. That seems like a pretty crappy bargaining position to be in, so it would be totally on-brand for the conference.

Scroll the slider back to the beginning... SLC radio guys take on things. After about 20 min, they ramble and I killed the stream, but there was some interesting thoughts in there.

Yikes, I didn't realize the ratings were so low - 14.69M viewers, which is the lowest ever for a title game.

Just for comparison, the 10 previous title games: (source)
2022Kansas-UNC18.1M
2021Baylor-Gonzaga17.081M
2019Virginia-Texas Tech19.630M
2018Villanova-Michigan16.5M
2017UNC-Gonzaga22.998M
2016Villanova-UNC17.752M
2015Duke-Wisconsin28.263M
2014UConn-Kentucky21.196M
2013Louisville-Michigan23.426M
2012UConn-Butler20.055M
It’s funny that Kentucky only added 1M viewers than Butler. Kinda shoots Kentucky’s narrative a little.

Why would the big ten ban teams from March madness when they have put more teams into the final 4 then the big 12 the last decade? Going back to 2013 big ten has put 6 teams into the final four compared to 5 from the Big12. No big ten teams have cut down the net during that time as opposed to the two Big12 championships but still nothing to be disappointed about.

TCU’s win for the Big12 was huge regardless of the championship appearance and just getting to the playoff (while it’s still 4 teams) is huge for any conference.
Jesus Christ lol stop.

Or you’re the Prez of OSU, WSU, Cal, etc and if this drags on long enough, the other schools will almost be forced to sign a short term extension since it will be too late to join another conference the next year and most will want a 2-3 year notice.

The game also was not competitive. I think Nielsen takes the average number of viewers over the course of the game (could be wrong here). I could see a lot of viewers dropping off late in the first half/early in the second half as the lead ballooned.
And honestly for me, I could stay awake for the women's game, weekend and early enough, why did they make the men's game so late, I would have watched to the end, but blowout plus I gotta work in the morning, no thanks

There is a risk that one of the corner schools will get antsy and make a move without waiting for a deal to be finalized. That would put Oregon and Washington in a tough spot. Do you pursue a Big12 bid or do you try to salvage a further crumbling PAC without a clear TV deal? Yes, they have the name brand, but that only goes so far if you're all alone.

I really think it will only take one crack and the dam will break, and the pressure on the dam is mounting the longer they take to get a deal that is acceptable. Clearly what they have found so far isn't even close.
