@BoxsterCy you might have enjoyed what we've been doing for the past few hours. We had a forester out here and we were traipsing through the woods talking about what management we can do to improve tree growth and better manage the populations. One part is Basswood & shagbark hickory and a couple of white oak; one part is black maple, ash, elm, a grove of Kentucky coffee trees & a few shagbark; and the far side of the creek (a south facing slope) has a couple of white oak and shagbarks. There's a couple of trees out there that he estimates to be around 80-90 years old.

We have a lot of invasive mustard & honeysuckle, and a bunch of young maples...the older trees are, well, getting old, and the younger trees can't fight past the canopy. He's helping us write up a management plan and an environmental grant to see if we can establish an oak savannah on that south-facing slope, plus do some strategic cutting, goat rental, and controlled burn to improve our woodland acres.
