I've found people outside of Iowa to be easily as friendly and helpful as Iowans. That counts New England, Texas, the South, California, and other nations.
I'd probably find it rough to have lived somewhere like Cali after leaving where I am and then end up back in the Midwest as well. We did actually just have a coworker who had grown up rust belt, worked in Cali a couple years, came to WI for a couple and just went back to Cali because she missed it so much. Not sure what part Knapp is from, but it's crazy when you're out there - an hour or two and you can be in actual mountains, national parks, go skiing, go to the beach, go to some of the best known US cities - just a lot of variety and really cool stuff that is accessible. And if you don't enjoy the colder seasons, you can avoid that but still get winter activities.
That's not to say the Midwest doesn't have its own set of attractions. They are different though, and since you mentioned looking for a change - I imagine coming back to somewhere you've already spent a lot of time, would be something of a disappointment - even though it's new to your wife. Also, moving back in late fall/winter is about the worst time to do so, lol. Like the time my South American/southeast coast raised coworker moved to WI in the middle of the coldest January we'd had in years. She remains bitter about winters here, ha.
Maybe you can take on a role of introducing the midwest to your wife or try to visit places you never did while you were here.

Knapp, good luck on finding some inner peace and happiness. I thought you moved back to the Midwest due to job switching, but I may be mistaken. Would another job change help or is the job ok and just not liking the rest of it? Maybe find a gym to join or a club about your and your wife's hobbies to meet people with common interests and expand your circle of friends? I don't know just spit balling some ideas. Heck buy two tickets to hoops tonight watching Iowa get beat down should cheer you up a little. (Damn I hope we beat them tonight)

Today is ate up. Wrestling meet 80 minutes away at 6. So I'm going to Xmas concert matinee at 2:15. Mom wants to get groceries. Concert kid doesn't feel well so I'm watching until around 11:00. Now wife says her friend is picking up santa workshop stuff at Mom's at 9:00 so I have to lug everything upstairs from the basement. Wife said I might as well load it for her too, hey why not.
Tomorrow, I will probably get asked why I didn't get anything done at the farm. I've learned not to answer those questions honestly.

Lugged everything upstairs and then wife's friend shows up. She's on phone so I start lugging it outside. She parked halfway up the driveway of course. Get half outside when she informs me that she had to drive somewhere and ends up taking three tubs. For people's knowledge Lexus SUVs don't hold crap. So I get to lug most back inside. I tell her the rest will be behind mom's car in the garage and she can grab whenever. She has several employees so just have a couple of them do it. More $$$ than all.of us combined so it won't hurt her.
Got a feeling I will be texted and will be doing this that half hour between kids concert and leaving for wrestling. I have no problem helping as long as there seems to be a plan and that plan doesn't involve me doing everything.
Well I have vented now.

so person with sloppy resume was a bad interview as I expected. A joke was made if I noticed errors on the next person's resume. I did. They butchered a month. "Well no one is perfect" said person who is no longer in charge of hiring. I get that. But again, these are not affect/effect errors. This is literally, you did not bother to run spellcheck on the document that is giving your first impression to employers. I'm not sitting there with a microscope trying to nitpick. It's literally that they are so obvious that they jump out. That person seemed ok but not my first choice. If this were a role where little details weren't a big deal, I'd let it fly. But this will be a role where noticing tiny differences could have a big impact.
I get another one today. Extremely slick, highly.......marketing-type resume. Little icons for contact info, stuff down the sides, clearly this person is trying to say they are hot ****. They give themselves a fancy title right under their name. AND THEY ******* MISSPELL IT! Literally right underneath their name is this glaring, big font mistake.
