It's obvious that I have to get my head right. I've already done the Midwest life and ran from it when I had the chance.

For my own mental health I have to learn to embrace this place. Right now it's weighing on me pretty heavy. I see this as 5 wasted years until I can start living again.

Obviously that isn't the right attitude....

At least Iowa isn't on fire. Cousin near LA had her car packed and was ready to skidaddle last night.

Out of curiosity what is it that is keeping you from living the life you want here? Nightlife?

@KnappShack

For me:
Los Angeles 6 months
Ft Worth 5 years
Bellevue, WA (near Seattle) 6 years
Cocoa Beach, FL 2.5 years
Bellevue (again) 4 years
Pullman, WA 6 years (3 in school, 3 after marriage)
Manhattan, KS 20 months
San Pablo & Albany, CA (East Bay) 2.5 years
Story County, IA 34 years

I live in Iowa because I choose the life. I've lived and worked in cities. My commute here is two pickups and a combine. The air is fresh, and the people are spread out. It makes me happy.

We each have our own choices and preferences. I hope you find your happy place...I've found mine. :)

Edit: "my commute WAS"...

Wow - Bellevue to Cocoa Beach and back again. Talk about going from one end to the other...

I'm not sure what's all going on with your life (and it's your business), but I hope you are talking with your wife about it. If you are saying that spending the next 5 years with her (regardless of your location) is potentially wasted time, you sound depressed.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on the subject, but I watched my wife (then fiance) go through depression when we were apart while I finished school. It was more than just being pessimistic about things. It was a daily struggle and it was scary.

Five years is a long time. If you need a location change, do it. Think about the two most important things in your life. If you are doing things to damage either of them, fix it. Everything else can be worked out.

Good luck, Knapp

Since I've moved back to the Midwest I really think people live here just to prove it can be done.

The "nice" thing isn't all that true. The weather is ******* awful. There's not a whole lot of natural beauty or things to do other than drink.

Thinking the Midwest is a good place to be from
I take it you've never been to southwest Wisconsin.

Daddy was an aeronautical engineer with Boeing. He was part of the group that was loaned out to NASA to help fix the Apollo/Saturn 5 issues. His responsibilities were the umbilical tower and the crawler. It was an interesting several years. :)

Well, if they faked it, they sure had a spit-ton of equipment out at the Cape to do it...
I don't think there is an "if" about it.

Are you using Wisconsin as an example of a place where there is something else to do besides drink?
No, natural beauty.

Are you living in Iowa? When I return to Iowa, I do get reminded of how friendly, polite and welcoming the people of Iowa generally are. I enjoy living in Minnesota but the residents do tend to have a layer of protection about getting to know outsiders. People are nice and have similar values to people in Iowa but there is that wall that you need to get through and it can be tough to do.

I'd recommend getting out and doing little stuff. Go to this park... go to this historical home... try this restaurant... After awhile, you should begin to appreciate the lifestyle and the people. A lot of times, in the Midwest, you have to create your own entertainment. Once you figure out/remember how to do this, it really is a pretty special place. Good luck. It's not so bad here. The Busch Light tastes the same as anywhere else and, if you're so inclined, Toppling Goliath might be the best brewery in the country.

Well...duh..... murders

Edit: pending where he is , I suppose attending Minnesota meat raffles would make it livelier.
It isn't just the fact that it's meat raffles, you're also drinking and playing pull tabs. I believe small town Wisconsin has similar meat raffles. However, in Minnesota, I'm guessing the meat raffles are less murdery.
