Two days there...stuck between Reno and Salt Lake City en route to Iowa from San Francisco. We caravan'd out of the City with two boys aged 3 & 4 and me in the car, ex in the U-haul truck. I had my car serviced at Aamco before we left as they had put in a new tranny a few months prior as part of a collision repair. They checked everything and told me I was good to go. We spent the first night in Reno. Next morning, small pool of fluid under the car. Took it to a station, had them tighten the bolts on the tranny & top off the fluid, then took off for Salt Lake City. Shortly before Elko I heard this horrendous thunk and the car stopped. Please note, this was waaaaay before cell phones. The ex drove on into Elko where he located a tow truck to come collect me & the kids & the car. We stayed in a dirt cheap hotel (ISU doesn't pay a whole lot to move a family of four across country to a new faculty position). I spent the next day on the phone the whole freakin' day...with various Aamco entities in SF, SLC & corporate (in Pennsylvania, I think). Aamco said it wasn't their problem because the warranty had expired two days previously. I pointed out that I had taken it in to be checked BEFORE the warranty expired, told them I was driving it across country, and they told me it was fine. After much shuffling from rep to rep, and increasing layers of anger, Aamco finally agreed pay to have the car towed to either Reno or SLC (the two nearest shops) and replace the transmission. They also paid for our two nights in that lovely dump with questionable AC (did I mention it was August?). We get to SLC - ooops - they have to order a part. They'll have it ready in four days. Ex was supposed to be in Ames in two days. All four of us crammed into the cab of that UHaul, left my car and the items it contained at Aamco, and the following weekend, Aamco bought a one way ticket to SLC so that he could go get my car (our ONLY car).
So, while Elko might be a lovely little oasis in the deserts of Nevada...I hold grudges, and that name only brings back HORRIBLE memories.
TL;DR: I hate Elko because reasons.
