Do they allow freshmen to live off campus in apartments? Things have changed, I know. Just curious. All freshmen had to be living in a dorm, in a Greek house, or in their parents' home back in the day.
No idea.

Just like I don't know how much longer this video is going to go. I am going to try to pause it.

Freshmen are not required to live anywhere. I know several that got apartments right out of high school. I know of at least one family that knew they were going to be having several kids go through ISU so they just bought a house for their kids and friends (charged rent) to live in for 8-10 years.

I knew of a family that did that as well. It would be nice to have enough money to afford that for this kids.

Same for me. Never make popcorn when you're almost blackout drunk, it doesn't end well
The only "appliance" we were allowed to have in our dorms was something called a "hotpot". Basically, it would heat about four cups of water for tea, instant coffee, instant soup. No popcorn poppers, no toasters or toaster ovens, no microwaves (hell, they didn't even HAVE small microwaves back then...just the expensive Amana monstrosities).

We learned by trial & error what you could actually cook in those hotpots.

Note: popcorn was NOT successful. :(

Like this one that my parents still use?

My first microwave was a Kenmore and looked similar to that. I bought it about 1987

I remember an episode of "The Odd Couple" where Felix and Oscar were on Let's Make a Deal (I think) and Felix wanted to go for the chance at a microwave. Now that thing was a monstrosity.

However, it does to end better than blackout drunk pizza making.

You want a bad story involving this. A guy from my hometown died in a house fire after going home from the bar very drunk. They traced the fire to thinking a pizza was put in the oven and passed out. Then again he had his son die in a house fire also and his daughter was raped and murdered. This was a family in the wrong place at the wrong time non stop.

I'm thinking ours was a "radar range"? That one eventually blew up when someone forgot that twist ties have a thin strip of metal in them (hint - not me!). The second one we got was one of the first with a turntable. Movin' on up!

KC - At ISU we did not have to live on campus as Freshmen - even back in our day. Overcrowded dorms were the norm (I lived 3 in a 2 man room in the Towers for about 3 weeks when I was a frosh). So they were happy to have you find other living arrangements.

Also we could have pretty much any UL listed appliance in the dorm. We had popcorn poppers, a hotplate, and a good sized toaster oven. Also the mandatory stereo system. But only just a little B&W 12" GE TV. (Edit - also a small fridge.)

But I do remember going in with other family members to buy our step-mother a microwave oven as a Christmas gift before I went off to school, so our family had one NLT Christmas 1975. I think it was from Monkey Wards.
