I don't remember it being an actual filet knife but it was pretty big. We would try to quietly get our kids in our yards when he brought that out. Luckily, it was only a couple of times.
Sounds exhausting but I'm trying to figure out why you're getting training from the Minnesota Saddlebred Horse Association.
I left at 5:25 and it was still a pretty stiff wind. I did make sure to head into the teeth of it so the return would be better. Surprisingly despite my neglect of my bike this year it felt pretty good. Heading down to Iowa next weekend to go on some ride with our team. Don't ask me where; Mrs. Velo arranged it. I was going to miss it due to a soccer tournament but we had to cancel. Mrs. Velo says she is disappointed that daughter's team isn't playing in tourney. I know she is actually disappointed that she is going to have me along for the ride.
I'm trying to convince my wife that we should move to Florida. It's not going well. She's always been near her parents and siblings so she can't even imagine what it would be like to live away from them.
Biking tip - develop routes in all four directions from home. Whenever you are set to go out check the wind direction and head out into the teeth of it. You will then make sure you turn around on time instead of overextending and having to ride back into a gale.
We never went into their house. Their dog was in the back yard and on their covered deck for the weekend. I'd duck over there and pet her whenever I had a spare couple minutes. They have a cat inside, but said he'd be fine with the automatic feeder.
I kinda felt bad for the cat. We'd be on the deck and their dog would be getting all kinds of attention from us. Meanwhile, the cat would be on its hind legs pawing at the glass door begging for attention.
I eased my guilt by reasoning that the cat was probably mocking the dog the entire time we weren't there because cats can be ********.
Check to make sure it doesn't have adjustable pedals. Many newer models do.

I had a reminder of how soon kids can recognize ways to get what they want. Set her in her crib for her nap and left. A few minutes later, "I need potty......I NEED potty........Potty!" I erred on her actually knowing, so there was no nap.

Had an old guy do the possible trade trick on me once. Asked a few questions about options he said the window sticker was in the glove box and left. I went into the shop and popped it open. Thought there was a silk handkerchief on top. Pulled it out looked and realized it was old lady underwear. All the mechanics were laughing at me. Don't know if he forgot or was trying to show he got a little. I didnt discuss it with him.

I probably fall into the same category as your wife, honestly. If the right opportunity presented itself, I wouldn't have been opposed to moving a longer ways away, but I always liked being within an 8-10 hour drive of our parents/siblings. It was not really out of any obligation sense, more in the "everyone is getting older and visiting each other shouldn't feel like a financial burden" sense.
My wife wanted to move to NYC initially, but since going through her atrocious stretch of losing her father, grandmother, son and mother in a five-year span, she has admitted that it was a good move to be within a day drive of everyone.
It really depends on your individual situation, though. There are definite benefits to both.

My lakes route is a pretty nice 20 mile route, not for a pro biker like you, but excellent recreational/fitness route for old man Boxster. Pretty flat after the first mile and generally pretty sheltered from the wind except when it's coming across the lake at you or down the railway corridor. Murphy's Law of Shifting Winds does seem to have me pedalling against the wind both ways when passing on the rail trail north of Cedar Lake.

We're both fairly young (30, 28) and don't have kids right now. Her mom just retired last year and her dad is close (both in 60's). He was a farmer so they never really traveled before so they plan on it when he retires. The furthest she's lived from her parents is 45 minutes and we currently live 3 miles from them right now.
My immediate family is all over (KC, Detroit, Rochester) so I'm used to being away, but not that far away. I've always wanted to move there and nearly went to school down there.
I'd want to move to the Pensacola area which is about a 16 hour drive from Ames.
