Random Thoughts VIII: The Ocho

Operation Cyclone Frenzy is nearing it's completion. Have accomplished just enough cleaning this morning to maybe disguise how I really live. Niece and NIF are coming this afternoon. Living alone in a house designed for two people and two dogs can be a bit much to keep clean and neat and it gets away from me sometimes. House is at least no longer embarrassingly cluttered and dusty.

Some child proofing remains. Need to zipstrip lock the display cabinets. Don't want the little dudes running around with WWII bayonets or a Nazi flag my dad "liberated" as a combat souvenir. Can imagine explaining to the Jewish neighbors "Oh, just ignore the little boys running around the yard with the swastika stuff, we are not really neo-nazi fascists!" And yesterday was Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Ohh! Dibs.

Keep the markers away from them too

My BIL has a used trench knife from WWI. It's cool, but the fact that is was used gives me the creeps.

We had a puppy playdate with my BIL and SIL's yellow Lab last night. Puppy slept 13 hours straight and is still tired today. I might have to do this every night.

Probably a good decision.

The teenager has her first job interview this afternoon, for a volunteer position at a hospital. I'm more nervous than she is.

/self indulging long reply.

My dad must have had a duffle bag full (think some were mailed home after the war since he was there for quite some time awaiting transport home). I have small WWII museum of stuff: A big Nazi banner (he had a bigger one but someone stole it), a Ortgies Deutsche Werke 7.65 pistol (won in a poker game), two Mausers, a training Mauser bored for .22 (likely for Hitler youth), a G-43 8mm (this one is actually valuable), German helmet, German parade bayonets, German combat bayonet, German canteens, German Luftwaffe officer hat, German Luftwaffe sheepskin winter hat, German artillery compass (2), German belt, my dad's full uniform, his scarf made of camouflage parachute cloth.

And lots of pictures. Some cool (German tanks), some serious and disturbing (concentration camp), and some nice human interest like friends made in Liege and befriending refugee civilians in Germany. If I recall the story correctly the one little blond girl in some of the pictures was a orphan. And the nicest thank you note sent to my grandmother from a gal who's injured and infected hand my dad (he was a medic) had treated.

Grandpa00 wasn't in the war, so no available war booty for me. I do regret, however, that I don't have anything from him, other than a belt with his name on it, which really isn't mine, it was given to little00, who's named after him. I missed out on the weekends of going thru his stuff, then regretted it, and decided to go to a sale of his tools and stuff. There were a few things I wanted to bid on, but felt like they went for too much for what I was going to use them for (farmers bid up the tools as tools, I just wanted a few things as momentos), so I hesitated on everything and got nothing. Each thing I told myself went for more than I'd pay for it, but at the end, I'd have paid the amount considering I ended up with nothing.

The son had his second baseball game last night. He tore a hole in the knee of his pants. Pictures aren't until Monday. He has something like 4 other pairs of pants that are the same style and still fit him from previous years. All of them are in various states of disrepair and/or dirtiness.

Barn burner of a game last night (7 inning games). They started out down 3-0. Fought back to get within 6-5 going into the the 6th and went ahead 7-6 going into the 7th. The bad guys scored 5 runs in the top of the 7th to make it 11-7. The good guys scored 5 in the bottom of the 7th for the win.

I wouldn't have had enough beers in the cooler for a game like that.

yikes, forecast is up to 91 now for this afternoon. Guess it will be the annual throw the A/C switch and see if it works!

OK. I have questions.
1. Are you travelling?
2. If not, did you just stop in at Super 8 on your way in to work for the free breakfast?
3. Was it on the floor for less than 5 seconds?
4. By biscuit, did you mean actual bready-like biscuit or is it a euphemism for something else?
5. Did anyone else like the movie Super 8?
6. Should I still feel bad that I accidentally knocked over our giant beer pyramid that we'd built when we stayed at the Super 8 in Des Moines for the high school volleyball tournament?
1. Yes, I'm in West Virginia now. South of Morgantown. My niece graduates from West Virginia Wesleyan tomorrow.
2. Doesn't everyone?
3. Longer than 5 seconds from what I could tell.
4. Yes actual biscuit. Need to remember that euphemism for future reference.
5. It wasn't bad. Too much of an homage to E.T.
6. Yes you should. Those guys probably put a lot of effort into building that

I know we joke about dibs on Boxsters stuff, but you know that dude is going to be around longer than all of us (unless he gets back into his rhubarb dessert kick).

My dad is close to being ready to signing the contract with the estate sale personand once that happens we can't take anything out of the house until after the sale. So far I am getting my grandpas old boyscout hat from the 30s and his old school metal Lionel Train set. I am not big on getting things just to get them so I am not sure if there is anything else I want.
