I hate formatting. Why my school couldn't use a word template with fields I don't know. I honestly think someone there hates grad students. But noooooooooooooooo. They have to have a template that someone formatted by hand with lots of tabs and sections and spacings.

If it's like ISU, they also don't give you easy access to a template or FAQ sheet to avoid these issues, so you just fly by night resubmitting something that's done because they don't like your introduction being called "Introduction" instead of "Chapter 1: Introduction."

I hate that part of the process. It's beyond stupid, but it gives someone a job to lord over grad students that want to finish.

We've got a 40 page pdf that is supposed to be made up like the final format should be and is full of 'useful tips' for formatting, but it doesn't cover cases like section titles that are longer than one line, or why they decided to use double spacing, 1.5 spacing, and single spacing all in sections right next to each other. Oh well, only four or five more hours and I'll be sending it to the rest of my committee. I'll deal with editing once I've got their approval on the defense.

And to be honest, if I were smarter, I'd have been done with this a couple weeks ago and would have paid one of the english grad students to format it for me.

At least someone gets paid. That's what matters.
I read a little about how Kate Turabian worked in the graduate office at UIC with this final approval for dissertations. It struck me that she had a horrible career that led her to writing those Chicago style guidelines for people to follow.

Oh well. That annoyance will be done soon. You've done the good stuff.
