Race Thompson

Michigan scares me. Almost as much, if not more than Minnesota. I see they have a top 150 PF coming in in their 2017 class and a couple bigs from their 2016 class who haven't played yet... They certainly have open playing time with DJ Wilson gone and Mo Wagner likely gone by the time Race is playing college ball. Their system fits Race's game as well and Belien is a well-respected coach. I'm sure Prohm will continue to give Race a Lindell like recruitment though throughout the summer and it's nice to have that well-established relationship.

In the PT department, while this is a problem in its own right, we do not exactly have any established superstars in the front court. Or really anywhere right now.

This is a delicate balance to strike, but with the graduate transfers heading out and only Young, Lard, and Jacobson in the way, I would figure that Prohm could honestly pitch a recruit of Thompson's caliber about as much PT as he would want from Day 1.

That is a pretty wide open circumstance.

I agree. Plus there is no reason Race couldn't play the 5 and have Lard and Young play the 4. The minutes are there.

Race is a top 100 recruit. If you aren't pitching early playing time then you might as well show yourself to the door.

Well, on Rivals he is a top 120 recruit and a 3 star. A high 3 star but a 3 star nonetheless. Now if you are pitching the ability to come in and earn playing time or earn being a starter then ok. But if he is looking for a sure thing of big minutes or being a starter you can't promise that.

247 composite has him as 4 star and rated as the 71st best player in the class. He has 9 high level offers so again, if you aren't offering the opportunity to see the floor right away you might as well shift your focus elsewhere.

Pitching playing time and promising playing time are two different things. I can guarantee Thompson is being pitched playing time, since the only posts we have right now for the 17-18 season are Young (has played half of a season, had solid but unspectacular success), Lard (has played 0 college minutes), and Jacobson (6&6 guy at Nebraska). I can also almost guarantee Thompson isn't being PROMISED anything. Playing time would have to be earned, and I'm sure he knows that.

That is exactly what I said, an opportunity to come in and earn playing time but him getting that playing time isn't a given.

I think Race has quite a bit of versatility and would have the ability to play the wing here to add to his playing time.

Also, it'd be nice to break the tradition of unathletic recruits from Minnesota. As much as I liked Jake Sullivan, I don't think anybody would call him an explosive athlete.

On the other hand, don't forget Andrew Skogland ;)

We have got our share of athleticism from Minny.

But of course Fred didn't have to recruit him. ;)
