Misc: Pro Golf...Tiger Woods

Bill Simmons tweeted a pretty good comparison.

Tiger Woods is like a star actor who hasn't made a good film in 8 yrs, only he's still treated like an A-lister. He's basically Johnny Depp.

Love Bill Simmons but that's a bad take. Tiger Woods won 5 tournaments just two years ago and was PGA POTY that year. That's only 1 full season removed from him being the best golfer in the world.

To each their own.

So winning three PGA Tour events in 17 months isn't considered upper echelon but one win combined between Spieth and Fowler in the exact same time frame is? If you want to make your rankings by the potential you see fine, but to say someone with more wins than those two isn't upper echelon is preposterous.

Tiger should quit ******* with his swing mechanics. Maybe just swallow his pride and go back to Harmon.

I'm not sure Harmon would coach him. I don't know how Tiger is selecting these guys. I will say his swing looks better but whatever they are doing with that short game has screwed him up.

This is what I was getting at originally, I didn't word it very well though.

I agree with this but he needs to go back to more of the elements of his 2nd swing. He'd never last physically with his first swing. And he knew that, and that's why he changed.

His Haney swing was probably the most functionally sound and sustainable swing there has been. When he left Hank he was getting back to scary good in a completely different way than he was before. Before he was explosive. With Hank, toward the end, he was making no mistakes with the exception of his driver.

He has not won a major since the PGA started testing for steroids and I doubt he gets more than 1 more but his chipping absolutely sucked here at the WM/Phoenix Open.

Let's just say he took PEDs. That's not why he won. Now, maybe the side effects caused injuries but it's not like the guy looks completely different now than he did when they began testing. He also was hugely supportive of testing. I don't know, I'm just skeptical. The guy turned into a workout freak and I've seen people that simply work out as part of their life that look more extreme than he ever did. I would actually go so far as to say that Rory has had a more dramatic body change in a short period than Tiger did. I don't think Tiger is done and I think he's probably going to find a couple years where he's the best play of the season, but he's wasted a lot of years that most peak at.

OK. He is Jennifer Anniston.

He is ranked #47 in the world. With this tournamnent he will drop out of the Top 50 next month rankings.

Let's put that into perspective. He basically took a year off and has been horrible this week. That's what it took to just get him out of the top 50. So 2013 wasn't such a bad year.

Jennifer Anniston ever won an Oscar, let alone 14 of them?

Tiger is going to start wearing the blood red shirt on Fridays because, well, you know the rest.

Brandel gets in enough trouble talking about Tiger but I'll go ahead and put Aaron Obelhoser in the completely skeptical category about the "between swings" affecting the short game.

I agree with him that working on the full swing changes should have zero or next to zero effect on the short game.

You certainly shouldn't look like some skillet that's playing in the pro-am.

The soap opera will be great fun this year.

I hate Brandel Chamblee. Having said that, from what I saw tonight, I think he's exactly right on his full swing. Tiger is not firing into his left side.

I don't know how much of his swing change is to blame. It's some of it. His swing is pretty different than it was for a guy competing at that level. The chipping is baffling. I don't know how you call it anything other than the yips. I think those guys are right that this obsession with mechanics has gotten into every part of his game and ruined it but the short game is more than that. I mean the guy had people thinking he was trying to run the ball up when he wasn't. I have never watched a player and conistently thought they had i played a certain part of their game i could have improved them. I did with Tiger and his short game.

Tiger drives over 300 yards then cannot get the chip up 15 yards to the green. He needs more testosterone.

Let's look at it from another perspective, he's been chipping and putting for 30+ years, a majority of that time brilliantly.

Don't give me that swing path bottoming out differently horsepoop.

You're either (A) a victim of super yips/washed up at this level or (B) insane

We'll see if the next step is "Well, the chipping has come back, if I just didn't hit it OB three times off the tee, I'd have been right there".

He was so embarrassed he didn't stay for the Super Bowl, that speaks volumes.

I'm a huge Tiger Woods fan, but unfortunately I'm also starting to come to grips that we'll never see the old Tiger Woods ever again.

I do think Tiger will get back to a competitive level again, just not anywhere near where he was. I don't see the love and the passion for the game that he used to have anymore. It now looks like such a grind for him every time he plays. He doesn't enjoy it at all.

Over analyzing every aspect of his game instead of just playing by "feel". He used to just go out there and tear it up.... shooting for every pin and laying waste to everyone. Now he's like a mechanical robot with no emotion, playing "safe" to the middle of the green, analyzing everything down to the smallest detail, etc.

He just needs to play in a LOT more tournaments IMO. Chipping and putting down at his home in Florida isn't working. He needs to just play.

I also got a bit of a feeling that he didn't want to make the cut at this tourney this weekend either. I don't know if he wants to attend the Super Bowl or not, some have indicated he's not, so maybe that's not it either. But the weather was crappy, and I don't think he particularly likes that tournament either. All the drunk fans that are just obnoxious isn't his cup of tea. Not making excuses, it just didn't look like he was enjoying himself much.... but when has he looked like he was enjoying himself playing golf lately?
