Post-game thread - ISU vs. Iowa

We were outrebounded because Iowa waits for 30 seconds to shoot, while we shoot a majority of our shots within the first half of the shot clock. More shots put up equals more rebounds for the defense.

Posts like these makes me wonder if people like you even watched the game. Sure we were out rebounded but we sure as hell weren't out hustled or out coached.

Did you see the game? Iowa calls time out and they go on a run at the end of the game. What did our coaches do during that timeout? Whatever they did Iowa goes on a run and we fail to finish. I can't call that superior coaching.

In addition, the coaching staff said that their point of emphasis this week was rebounding. They presumably worked on it all week. What are the results? Just in case you didn't see we got out rebounded again.

Poor rebounding, missing free throws and not finishing the game are all coaching. Is Iowa that much more athletic than our team that we get out rebounded? I don't think so. I think they were better coached and hustled more for the boards.

I say again we have a long way to go.

No, I would say in the case of this basketball team, and this coach, I am a glass is half-empty person.

There is a lot of athletic talent on this team, and I don't feel this coach is utilizing it. It is not the first time that we as fans have seen this. I was just amazed watching the game-thread comments tonight. It was like a lot of people were not watching the same game I was. The same problems are still there. The only player on the team who truly knows HOW to rebound is Gilstrap. He grabs the damn ball! The others just tip it around, and God forbid if they use their butts or elbows to move someone out of the way! This is where CB and Ham are soft, and what I don't get is that GMac is supposedly such a good "big" man coach. Well, a major part of being a big man on a basketball team is rebounding.

I just don't see any discipline in GMac's teams. They might play well for a few times down the floor, passing the pall around quickly, and getting it to the open man. But then they are just as likely to come down and stand around, then just dribble, or put up a 3 attempt 10 seconds or less into the shot clock after 1 or 2 passes. Sorry, but that is not a well-coached team, and we have all watched it for 4 years.

I keep hoping I am going to see some improvement, but I am losing faith. Honestly, I think Bradley will bury them. I hope not, but nothing I saw tonite shows me anything different.

They just beat a very bad in-state rival by 10 points on their home floor! ISU gave up 71 points to a bad team that was only averaging 61. Only NC Central, and Prairie View had given up more points to Iowa this year. They allowed that very bad team to out-rebound them. They allowed them to take like 26 3 point shots, and make 11 of them. What do you think will happen if we allow teams in the Big 12 to take 25 to 30 3 point shots? They still can't make 70 per cent of their free throws, and that will kill them in the Big 12. They allowed a bad team to cut a huge lead in half in the last few minutes, to the point that the coach had to put the star back on the floor. How embarrassing was that?

I see nothing that tells me that GMac knows what he is doing. If someone wants to point out to me what indications there are that he does, I willing to consider those points. I just don't see anything. Sorry.

The one good thing outside of CB that I saw tonight was the play of Dendy again. I hope he is working his way back to a healthy state, because I do think that he can be special. Of course, for whatever reason, it seemed like just as he got into the flow of the game and was doing well with DG, GMac took him out. Now, that may have been to protect his knee, but I have my doubts.

I agree. Why do we even suit up for these games if we're only going to win by a lousy ten points?

At the end of the game our guys were probably told to not foul. Let them shoot their shots, don't stop the clock so they can make it a game.

We have more work to do, but I was happy with our effort tonight. The end score does not tell the story of the game at all.

We beat a weak, and less than average opponent by 10 pts., with their assistant HC at the helm, on our home court. Regardless of the stats and how you spin them... this is not a good sign.

I'm glad we won, but we certainly need some work if we think we are going to compete and finish with even a .500 conference record. We have too much talent to be where we are right now. I think we all can agree on this.

This is just my assessment of where we are presently. I'm not trying to bash; just be realistic.

According to the box score, each team was credited with 24 rebounds. How is this getting out-rebounded?

Ugh. Who really gives a **** that we let them run a little bit at the end? This game was not in question at the end...and understandably there was a let down. Our guys were playing not to foul, and thus the defensive intensity went down. Leave it to some to let 3 influence their perception of a great game. Get real.

Glad the haters could make it out tonight.

The team showed up on the boards and were fighting for rebounds, something they didnt do vs Calf
'
The team showed fire something that has been missing.

The team did go after lose balls and there was fight in them

Once Dendy gets into shape he will be a nice player.

yes they won but this game shows they still have a lot to work on
The team dictated the pace of the game

Nice to see Lucca make a hard 3, he needs to do that more.

The team moved well on O to start with but went through spans where they didnt and that is when they stuggled

D is worrysome at times

Nice to see Ham involved

I wish Gatens played for ISU

Colvin is going to be special

DG needs to learn how to finish his shots

I loved the athletic display tonight. I loved that we threw in some three-quarter-court pressure, and it worked. I wish we could see the passing I saw in our first couple of games. I think that is the one major thing we are missing. Our passing was so crisp, so decisive. They were better tonight, but everybody is dribbling too much.

I also think it was nice to see Dendy looking more like he was early on. The knee must be feeling much better. He brings us a new dimension of athleticism. Kelvin Cato-like.

Yeah, we are not better than 8th in the conference right now, but we very well may be there. Have patience, ******** about Mac won't do anybody any good. Not like we can afford to fire him, or would do anything during the season. Hopefully you guys can keep the Mac bashing down to a minimum until the end of the season. But I know you guys, it won't happen.

Amen.

LOTS of negativity....

I took it this way:

Gmac tried to be nice and took his foot off the gas... maybe the intern coach didn't recognize?

Personally... against your instate rival, NEVER take your foot off of the gas... beat them by 40 if you can.

I give credit for GMac doing the right thing... by being polite and Licklighter would have recognized this.....

Iowa did play to the end, infact they spead up the game and it worked well for them. Just because Mac calls off the dogs doesnt mean Iowa should give up. Mac did pull off the dogs a bit to earily but the players on the court should have played a bit better in the end.

Mac isn't perfect as a coach, but maybe with your superior coaching from the bench, you should contact Pollard and offer your services and immense BB knowledge. Better yet , on second though, offer your services to Bill Fennelly.

I await your funeral notice with glee if you do either.

The good:
Brackins offense..he didn't force anything tonight
Dendys knee
Team defense.....minus the last three minutes
Showing the press......who cares if it didn't do much....at least we showed something different
GMAC screaming at them to RUN

The bad:
Iowa
Hilton for an Iowa-ISU game....may have been good for any other non-con, but this series...you shouldn't be able to hear yourself think...the entire game!

I agree... I chalk it up to a novice interim coach... and our coach being polite, a bit too early.

Iowa does that to you. I think their stragady is to put the team to sleep. For a bit it was ISU run down get a quick shot then Iowa sloooooooooooooooooow it way down for a questionable shot with 5 secs on the shot clock, then ISU run for a good look quick shot, then Iowa sloooooooooow again.

I saw the game and have read every post on this thread. I believe that Dryburn, Hawkeye_t, HititHard, and some others were often right in their critiques. And, no, the critiques had little to do with moaning, seeing the glass half-empty, etc., but rather made some substantial points. I think if I could sum up what is wrong I would suggest that the team does lack some mental toughness, exhibited in careless free throwing, allowing a Hawk flurry at the end, and some inadvisable shot selection (yes, I know we shot a good % but the critique stands.) With regard to this last point and to phrase it in a clumsy manner: we would rather work easy for a hard shot instead of working hard for an easy one.

Iowa hit 4 3s in the last 3:30 I believe. If they miss a couple of those, we win by 13, 16, or 19. Just because the score says we only won by 10 doesn't mean we didn't play well.

We were up 14-19 the entire second half until the last 3 minutes. How in the world are people complaining about that???

I thought we played a good game all around. Sure there are still things we need to work on but it was CLEAR that Mac stressed a lot of things this last week.
