Post game thoughts

This point you make is spot on...the teams that make a run in the NCAAs always have solid guards. Look at ISUs best teams...mid 80s and turn of century...both had top notch guards. Garrett's game is lacking on a number of levels. Buckley never gets in, Boozer doesn't get much time, everyone else seems to be a walk on type guy (Peterson, Haluska, Eikmeier). We have to shore up the backcourt.

Why would you throw a scholarship freshman into a group with two former walk on seniors? I see your point, but find it interesting that you put Eikmeier in there.

...everyone else seems to be a walk on type guy (Peterson, Haluska, Eikmeier).quote]

I really really really hope Eik isn't a "walk on type guy" ...clearly he wasn't ready this year though. A lot of weight and strength needs to be gained...

The difference is consistency. When you have the same players in a program, you can actually teach them things from year to year. In McDs case, he has had different starters year after year. Consistency is very important and I think we'll finally have that. McD needs more time because he is starting over every year. Is some of that his own fault? YES. But that doesn't diminish that he needs more time with the "good" players he has.

Then explain to me were Robinson benefits from "consistency" when this is his first year. I have little doubt that if we played OSU tomorrow that we would lose. They are noticeably improving and growing as a team from game to game. You don't have to put down stakes to see if any progress is being made. I just want to see this same type of growth out of ISU.

Yeah, a Butler team that is in the top 20 and is 18-1...how dare he talk about them! The gaul...BUTLER IS TOO YOUNG TO BE ANY GOOD. Did you know:

+ Of Butler's top 8...they have 3 freshman, 4 sophomores, and only 1 junior.

+ Their top player is a sophomore, the next 2 are freshmen, the next is the junior, and the fifth is another freshman. They top three off the bench are all sophs.

I WONDER IF BUTLER IS COMPLAINING ABOUT THEIR "YOUNG TEAM" OF GUYS THAT WERE NOT MCDONALD'S AAs?

You really don't get it, do you? May be your worst post which is really saying something. We know Butler is a nice team (in the Horizon League). Does it not make you a little upset that he completely ignored your alleged favorite team? National exposure is a good thing you know.

I would have liked to see Mac bring in Haluska early after it was evident Peterson is not able to guard big time point guards.
And Mac needs to let Diante know this is now the Big 12 season where he is much to slow to dribbling the ball out front. The KU game really showed that we do not have the guards who can guard or protect the ball.

Let me tell you what I "get"....

1) Our program (with a coach in his 3rd year at the helm) is struggling right now. We played an atrocious non-conference schedule and lost some disturbing games during that time. We are now in the conference schedule and look to be headed towards a finish near the bottom of the league.

2) In light of the items listed in point 1, I continually read on this site about how our coach has the program "headed in the right direction". While there are many excuses given for our poor results (ie: lack of wins), the biggest excuse used is the "we are young" excuse.

3) I look at a program like Butler and I see a team that has a coach in his 2nd year with a team this year that is almost an entirely new team from last year (led by freshmen and sophomores)...and they are winning big. Sure, they play in a lousy mid major conference but they played a good non-conference schedule and they are doing it all with a new coach and a very young team and without using those things as excuses.

4) Bob Knight is a purist. Sure, I want ISU to get some exposure but not because our best player drops 40 on an unranked KU team at home in a loss. I would like to get some exposure the Butler way...being 18-1 and in the top 25 with a team full of freshmen and sophomores. Often, when you watch SportsCenter (which I do less and less) you cannot tell who won the game from the highlights they show. I remember a few years ago when Kobe was really on a tear...I think he scored 80 points or so one game during a particularly hot stretch...but the Lakers as a team were not very good. They would spend 5-10 minutes of Kobe adulation and they in about 15 seconds say..."oh, and the Lakers lost to (fill in the blank)". ESPN is all style over substance and Bob Knight is swimming against the current in that environment.

How about putting someone else besides Petersen and Haluska on the Big 12's best player. Collins abused those two.

Too many pages to read through, so I don't know if someone already commented on this or not. Haluska did an amazing job guarding Collins. He nearly shut him down. Every time Collins was going to drive to the basket or get an open 3-point shot, Haluska was right there to stop him. Garret on the other hand couldn't defend Collins to save his life. Haluska is not my favorite player, and I hate his shot selection, but you have to give him more credit for his defense.

He plays his heart out for a team he loves. He may not have the most talent out there, but he gives it his all 100 percent of the time. He will be remembered for that and I thank him for it.

You can say whatever you want but Staiger specifically was built up to herculean proportions on here last year. I seem to recall a lot of talk about one of our best players not being able to help us because of the NCAA.

What does this have to do with anything this year?

It was Petey that guarded Collins and wasn't very successful.

First I agree about Haluska's defense, but we need to give him a break...Collins wears you down because he is so strong and quick. We also did a better job with help defense in second half on Collins.

Not to mention that Collins might be the cockiest SOB I've seen this year. Dam is it annoying watching him b***h and run his mouth the ENTIRE game. And how is it possible that his neck is wider than his head? He literally has a tree-trunk for a neck.

Yeah, but you have to give him credit...if he doesn't come out hot, ISU probably plays the game with the lead...

Wow, this came out of nowhere. You responded to my post so you could ***** about the program with little to no relevance to the topic I was discussing.

As an ISU fan, you should want them to talk about ISU at any given opportunity, whether it is because we just happened to play on their network or because one of our players had a great game. How do you not get this? This is not a point you can ***** about. You're a gem. Keep up the good work.

I wish we had him on our team.

He was awesome.

I get you dont like our coach and will rip him at all costs. How many games have you watched his year?

1) There is winnable games coming up, lets see how they fair before ripping the coach too much.

2) OK this team isnt young but it isnt really experenced either.

3) The foundation was made at Buttler. All the new coach had to do was step in and keep the ship sailing. He had players in the pipline that fit that system. McD came in and had a pile of rocks covered in crap. When he took this job there were 4 players with experence on this team. Only 2 were legit Big 12 players. He also had 1 RS player that left and 3 players signed that didnt want to come. Morgan would have struggled with his players. He has had to build depth and quality. ISU is a program that has to develop talent. People often over look how important it is to have 3 or 4 older guys to go with younger guys. Class ballance is very important to winning in college BB for most teams, does ISU have that now? McD has had to build everything from the bottom up. He should get some heat yes, but to start over now is crazy.

4) Any ESPN time for good things from ISU is good ESPN time.

Man, you need a sedative. I'll say it again...I have absolutely nothing personal against McDermott. How could I...I don't even know the man. I am loyal to ISU...not Greg McDermott. I want ISU to win in MBB...not struggle and be a doormat in the conference. Period.

1) Someone asked me if I was calling for him to be fired earlier. My answer is no...we have a lot of ball to be played yet. However, if we were to not win another game (which I truly doubt will happen) I would want to see a change made.

2) The "young" excuse is lame...you know it...everyone knows it.

3) Yep, Butler is a cake job...kids are fighting to go to Butler...they get their pick of any recruit they want...all they have to do is roll the ball rack out at Butler and they win. The ISU job on the other hand has so many negatives it is impossible to win. By the way, you seem to believe that McDermott shoulders absolutely no responsibility for any of the defections after his hiring.

4) I like to see ISU get some run on ESPN but if they were talking about a player from a non-ranked Butler team dropping 40 on a non-ranked opponent instead of an ISU team that was rated in the top 20 with a 1 loss season working...you would be pissed.

Name a single ISU team that has went dancing without one very skilled upperclassmen...I like Petersen, Haluska, Thompson, and Vanderbeeken, but none of them are close to all conference material...I'm going to say the "young" excuse is a valid reason, and just wait for you answer my question and prove me wrong...just one ISU team is all I need...

Don't change the subject, and don't spin what I'm saying, just answer the question and prove me wrong.

So what is your solution to the situation? You always come on here and criticize everything and everyone. Yet I never hear a solution to the problem. Is it fire the coach? If so, WHO do we get that can win quickly. Because if they aren't going to win quickly, replacement is pointless. McD has some good players coming in and some excellent players interested.

If the solution isn't fire the coach. What is it? Do you want the style of play to change? What?? Do you want different players off the bench to play? I'm assuming that a coach plays his best players.

Rather than constantly complaining, how about giving us what you see as a solution to the problem.

I think you'll find the solution isn't as simple as you'd like to believe.
