Possible candidates for ISU's open OC position...

That's great but just pointing out that it is possible does not make it likely.

It means the odds are lower. There's a reason the vast majority of hires are experienced.

Something not being impossible does not make it likely and is not a basis for judging if something will work out.

Someone wins the lottery every couple weeks, but that doesn't mean you are going to.

Its not like these two are some random guy off the street. They have been around football their whole life. One spent over 10 years in the NFL at the greatest learning role there can be back up QB.

I just don't think you understand what I'm saying. Nobody is a sure thing and it is all about probability.

It is possible that a ton of coaches could be great OCs. Hell, the IWCC coach has built a program into a national title contender. He would be a great hire!

Klenakis was an OC for a very powerful pistol offense, he would be a great hire!

Rosenfels has no experience as a coach in the BCS, but neither did Malzhan and look at him. Great hire right there!

You can't use that as an argument. I'd rather not bet on someone with literally no playcalling experience as our OC, but I would be ecstatic with him as our QB coach.

It's about making your chances as high as possible. What if what made Sage a successful backup doesn't help him in playcalling? It is a high risk when it really isn't necessary.

Yep. I have absolutely no doubt he would be a great guy for molding young QBs. I think he would also be a very young and personable coach for recruiting.

I wouldn't just throw him out there to call an offense in the Big 12 though.

While I don't disagree, I would prefer Austin Flynn over Sage.

How about this:

OC - Older sort of like Wally
QB - Sage Rosenfels
RB- OC if he wants it
TE - Austin Flynn

I believe those are the openings that we have. I like this idea. I think that Klenakis would have been a good choice, but I don't think it was the right situation. I think he would be a really good choice and he may be more qualified, but it needs to be someone outside the program. There was a small window that they could have gotten away with it if they announced a week or two ago.

Sage all day, every day over Flynn. So much experience under so many different coaches and systems that it's another Hoiberg scenario waiting!

Based on Williams most recent report this is what I am leaning towards:

OL/OC - Coach K
QB - Sturdy or Flynn
WR - Sturdy or Flynn
TE - Barkema
RB - Toldeo Guy

With Sturdy also becoming Assistant Head Coach

Just name someone already. I will be surprised if Flynn or sage is on the staff since their names come up a lot.

If our OC is indeed an internal hire, curious as to why you like coach K over Sturdy? I like Sturdy's Washington State experience. Talk about a difficult place to attract talent. I think he did what he did with lesser talent than what coach K had in Nevada.

Just what I feel based on Rhoads wanting to be a run first type of spread.

For one thing, Klenakis has been an OC for something like 13 years. So he has lots of experience. If you look back just a couple of years ago, Klenakis name was being mentioned as a possible OC at a lot of prominent universities. Klenakis would not be a bad choice IMO. The biggest knock would be that we promoted from within last time with Mess and that did not work out. But there is the possibility that CPR was a bit ahead of the curve when Klenakis became available and was thinking of his next OC because he had his doubts about Mess at that point. Bleil was moved to TE's to make room for Klenakis.

I can confirm that someone on the GV coaching staff has not heard anything about Flynn and Iowa State...not saying it's not possible but this is what he said 30 minutes ago.

Klenakis as OC would certainly make Trevor Hodge and Darius Lee Campblell "happy campers"...........

SMH I hope not Coach K at this point, can't wait this long for something like that.

I don't mind if it would be Coach K but it just doesn't make sense why they would take this long to announce. At this point it seems as tho if he gets it that your settling for him cause we couldn't get better. Not saying that's the case but if u wait this long to make an announcement for someone that's been on staff and is known to be in the running, just doesn't look, feel or sound good imo.

Personally, I think the wait time is irrelevant in whether or not coach K should be hired as the OC. For me, it has everything to do with thinking he's really not the right guy for the job, tho. I think a mixture of fortune (luck), good players (Colin Kaepernick) and timing gave him the best hand he'll ever be dealt. He played the hand well, obviously. But for him to be successful, to that same extent, a confluence of similar circumstances would have to transpire. I don't think he'll ever strike gold like that again. There are reasons that no BCS level schools picked him up as OC, even after his success at Nevada.

The same could be said of a lot of OC's. Klenakis has actually been a pretty good OC over a long period of time. And he has picked up work right away whether it be at OC or OL coach when situations have arisen such as when Petrino was fired from Arkansas where Klenakis was OC.

I know Klenakis left Nevada to go to Arkansas and coach under Petrino. I do not know how many other BCS level OC positions he applied for. Perhaps you could tell us all the ones he applied for that he did not get.
