Players Era

So going forward, will teams find out if they have been included in the Players Era soon enough that if they don't make it they could then go get in something like Maui? Or are they going to just go ahead and continue to book those other tourneys as a safety net and then bail if they get the Vegas invite?

Every MTE outside of Players Era and Acrisure Series is having trouble getting commitments. It'll just become a scramble in the spring once those two events are full.

I'm expecting all these other tournaments to change to the times and start offering NIL incentives.
Likely nowhere near the money from the Players, but at least something

We are not able to offer multi-million dollar NIL prize, but what we can offer you is a percentage ownership in one of Maui's finest timeshares...?

I feel like it’ll become similar to bowls where the MTE’s partner with the conferences to let them pick teams based on the payout pecking order. So the Big12 will commit 8 teams to the Player Era, 1 or 2 to Maui, 1 to Atlantis, and so on. Teams will leave their Thanksgiving week open and plan their travel based on where they get selected.

what a bummer we get into that tourney this year and get creighton, st john's, and syracuse - that was bad luck.

now with a younger team next year, watch us get UCONN, Duke, and Florida (have no idea if they're in it or not).
it is ironic how isu always gets only 1 elite team in these MTEs that are seemingly loaded

Im guessing ESPN is paying a pretty penny for Maui and Bahamas broadcasting rights along w/ teams having to pay their own way, they have the money to do it. Im sure they also see Players era rights being up for bid right now and ESPN will have no problem dropping the two tournaments if they get exclusive rights to Players era. They will need to offer money to the brand name teams at least or lose out.

I think they’ll take a wait and see whether the PE payouts are sustainable. With the larger tournament, are they still going to guarantee $1m? I thought this year was a bit under that already.

If ESPN goes all in on PE, I’d think a rival network would snatch up Maui quickly. Might not be able to match the PE payouts, but getting in the ballpark would keep it viable.

If the NCAA had any sort of foresight they would introduce some sort of NIL payments to the players of the NCAA tournament before someone else starts a post season tournament that does.

Say a progressive pay scale for each round. Round of 64 $5k per player
Round of 32 $10k
Round of 16 $20k
Round of 8 $40k
Round of 4 $80k
Final $160k

Assuming 15 players per team that would be about $29m which is a relatively small price to pay to protect the $1b the event brings in.

I guess they could give $1k to the rosters for the players in the first 4 games

Sportico previously reported that other participating schools, including UNLV and Iowa State, had not received their payments on time. Michigan, which won the Players Era men’s championship, said last week that it had received its participation money, but was still waiting on word for the bonus $1 million NIL payment the Wolverines earned by taking the tourney title.

The NCAA and foresight are two things that we have yet to see together.

I find it hard to believe they're making enough money to cover these expenses.
Jamie is nothing if not an accountant and i find it hard to believe he'll send his MBB to an event that cant pay their bills on time (or at all) even if the competition is elite.

You just posted a link saying they haven't paid their bills on time.

right which is why i wonder the long term sustainability of this event and teams desire to participate

i get why schools like ISU have to go to this event, if the money is legitimate
but if its all a fugazi and we're footing the bills of flight, hotel, etc. and not being paid the promised $1m
we need to just go back to normal MTEs like Maui, Atlantis, ETC

I've met people like this who like to talk about how wealthy and well-connected they are but can never back it up with results. The incoherent tournament bracket + late/missing payments is definitely giving those vibes.
