Players Era

The initial million went to the basketball team. It’s already been paid out.
Maybe I heard him wrong, but on the radio show I thought Pollard said it went to the general fund that pays players across all sports so they didn't dip further into their reserves? If we got additional money from this tournament I'm guessing it would have went to to the same place, so its not like our players were going to get another check if we played in a money game.

I believe the breakdown was the initial million was distributed to the team and any additional earnings in this tournament was going to the general NIL fund

Don't love tjs comments about not caring about the money. Bad look to his llayers who would get the money if Milan put up and made a 3.

Its a stupid format, but I hope that doesn't create any discord in the lockerroom.
If he does what you say he will have a lockerroom that cares about money first.

It truly is the disorganized nature of this thing that has me fuming. Large amounts of money, an entire field of pretty much all respectable programs, excellent broadcast production quality...but a half-baked scheduling structure. Impossible to determine if the ambiguity was planned or the event organizers are inept.

They aren't following this format next year, so complaining about it is kinda pointless. One thing I will say is that this format got more eyeballs on games than any other format. How many fans were paying attention to every game and working out tie breaker scenarios?

I don't know if the format next year is official, but if it is this, it sounds amazing.

2 separate trips to Vegas
8 pods of 4 play round robin
1st place teams play a tournament later
2nd place teams play a tournament
3rd place teams play a tournament
4th place teams play a tournament
Isn't that 6 games each team? That's a lot if spread over TWO weeks, and its what, half your non-con? That seems like a LOT.

given all the scrutiny this year, I think the format changes next year.

4 8-team brackets, champ of each bracket plays for the title.
Totally agree, although a true champion would require 5 games at least for the winner and runner-up. Not sure how that can be done.

Sounds like the format will not change when it goes to 32 next year. Will still be pool play and then advancement based on criteria to the championship. The quote I saw basically said "think of AAU".

Part of me thinks the format is to manufacture controversy for posts / clicks. You can't deny that while the basketball has been fantastic, rage posting has added to the publicity of the event.

Everything I hated about this tournament came to the forefront. Teams like KU that play the odds to rack up points versus just playing basketball. Teams assigned cupcakes benefit from wasting them while teams like ISU get screwed (only tournament wise) by playing a ranked squad. Everything about how the tourney is run just screams gambling and lack of sportsmanship. Did I enjoy being here and watching our men play? Absolutely. That I’ll take every time. But the format sucks.
Exactly.

DM Reg article says ISU is contracted for next 2 years in Vegas
Yeah there are some teams that are locked into tournaments. Houston, Kansas, Baylor, and Iowa State all have multiple year agreements with this tournament. Arizona is locked in to a different tournament for next year so they won’t be in Vegas even with a top 8 finish

I'd disagree with that take, I thought he looked like crap. Other than his 3 point shooting, he was out-played by our freshman in just about every aspect. Had a bunch of turnovers & got blown by on several occasions on D.
Our Freshmen is going to outplay a lot of guys.

CBS after hours pod with Jeff Goodman (excellent by the way) one of the panelist said he was looking up where Toure transferred from cuz he thought he was a 4th or 5th year guy.

He said no way was that kid a freshman

Yeah, I think this is probably the right take. The more I think of it, I’m leaning toward making a donation to WeWill. It won’t touch what they “lost”…maybe there’s a larger wallet out there that will feel the same way. I think you could have been justified getting to 20, but KU fouling to try to run up the score feels wrong too. I’d rather reward integrity.
