Players Era

We have no one to blame but ourselves.

The tie breakers were very clear:
Overall record
Head to head
Point differential (20 max per game)
Total points scored
Total points allowed
AP rankings

If the tournament matters, then you score and run it up.

If the tournament doesn’t matter, then you dribble it out.

That's a lot of moving parts for being 'clear' vs. just win and move on with brackets.

I didn't really pay much attention to how it was set up but seeing it in real time doesn't help.

A solution to this mess, if they continue with this format going forward, would be to have a multiplier for the point differential based on kenpom rankings. That way the teams that play harder teams actually get a benefit of playing harder teams. There has to be a solution to this if they refuse to use a bracket
When they go to 32 teams next year, they should just set up 4 different 8 team brackets, and have 4 winners.

I haven't read the whole thread so this might already be mentioned. I just caught that we are playing in the other arena, which Syracuse has already played two games in. So, slight advantage there for them.

That’s exactly how it’s going. The final 4 teams will have to go back to Vegas a second time for the semifinals

Don't care about tv...we're here in Vegas.
Don't even really care who we play.
It's because I can't buy tickets until I know which session we're in. And I'm a plan ahead type person, so the way this thing is being run is driving me batspit crazy.
Thanks for supporting the team in person. Hope you are enjoying your trip!

It is what it is I guess.

format sucks can’t do anything about it. It’s still a P5 game

no one was bitchin when we were playing Miss. st in a neutral setting. Which, via KenPom miss st is much worse than Syracuse.

Creighton is also slightly worse than CUse, FWIW.

Officially I don't think the players get paid. Iowa State gets the money. ISU will already have contracts with the current rosters.
Blum said the basketball team got the million. If they would have won the whole thing and got the second million that would have went into the NIL pool

Better than if he had flipped it back out for a crazy quick buzzer beater to tie.

I think the format/criteria is dumb, extremely so when there's money on the line for the players, but it is what it is. I'm thrilled that our program is in a state where we got invited to this thing, have played really well in it, and will likely get invited in the future.
As long as CTJO is the coach there is a strong likelihood that ISU is top 8 in the XII which equal participation the next year. Could have annual trips to Vegas for the next five years.

Still extra $$$ for the team, and honestly, probably some extra motivation. TJ's thoughts after the game make me love him even more. Made for Iowa State and Ames, IA.

"Going into it, you know that point deferential is a part of this," Otzelberger told CBS Sports. "The respect I have for Coach McDermott and his program, we're not going to put the game in position where we're trying to run up the score and get extra points late to win by a greater margin. To me, the relationship and the character of our program is more important than that. The easy solution would have been if we would have been up by [20], then it would have been fine, but that wasn't the case. We want to do the right thing."

Has anyone considered that maybe they asked TJ who he wanted to play?

This could be a chess move on TJ's part... cause this game no matter the outcome will play a part leading up to our games against Houston and Kansas. We blow Syracuse out by 25 and that gets in Kelvin's and Bill's head. We lose and that gives us a little extra motivation when it's time to play them. Plus gives us some quality film.

I wouldn’t be so confident on the 25 pt win. Syracuse should have beat Houston

I don't think any of this is a thing.

Bill and Kelvin have been around long enough to know a 25 point win in November doesn't mean much once conference season gets going.

we've already signed a multi-year contract.
