If we had Tamin, I might agree. But once he went down, getting out of town 3-0 is a great result. Syracuse is still a great "name" to be whipping up on. Losing to Tennessee or getting boat raced by Gonzaga without Tamin would in no way be a better result.

WHy do you think ISU would get boat raced without Tamin? They seem to be pretty good without him. When he comes back ISU may never lose again. :jimlad:

You're in the minority judging from the comments in here and social media last night.

It is what it is, but getting to compete against Michigan, Tennessee, or Gonzaga would have been alot more fun than beating up on some lower tier ACC team. That's just my opinion.

The loud whiners on social media are not a majority. They are just loud and relentless. And yes, typically people on the internet who aren’t being overly negative and searching for crap to complain about are in the minority on an Internet forum. Happy to be in the group who enjoyed this tourney.

One other interesting thing about this tourney: beating 2 Big East teams and seeing other teams play multiples from another conference, etc. might help with clearer seeding in March because the comparisons might end up easier to make. This tourney may help a lot with that, especially in the future.

(honestly started typing this as 3 Big East teams, but that's the old days...)

I saw someone defending this tourney system, because its like kids soccer tourneys. There are some issues with that.

First, they said one thing leading up to the start on how it was going to work, then at some point changed it. If they had clearly released the rules on their official page from the start and everyone could look at them there would not have been nearly the confusion. Instead they kept it vague and completely changed the rules that they told the media before the tourney.

Second, there is a huge difference between a U12 AAU soccer tourney and a NCAA D1 Basketball game. Especially when there is $Millions on the line. I mean just the amount of scoring in a basketball game vs a soccer game make the point differential questionable. Especially when that is the first tie breaker. But relying so heavily on that tie breaker when it means teams play for that much cash or not is ridiculous.

Third, then having no real plan for how to to make 3rd round matchups. I guess getting Syracuse made us look really good, but it is insane we didnt play another team like Alabama or Auburn or someone that actually had won a game. Even if that meant we would need to play a later game today or tomorrow.

Overall it was a good week for us but man this tournament needs to get some things figured out for next year especially with the increased size.

My only issue with the format is that it doesn’t adjust for strength of opponent. Beating St. John’s by 1 is better than ND by 10. Use a formula that takes into account who you beat as much as how much you beat them by.

I thought it would be a weighted "point system" where record, point dif, strength of opp, PF, PA and rank were all factored in. Not where they were their own criteria and were only considered as the evaluation laddered down the system.
Under a total weighted point system, there is no doubt we are top 4. Might still have been #3 with the dominant Michigan and Gonzaga games.

Stolen from Reddit. This is actually a great idea

It's the no-brainer way to do it - one Big 12 team per group of 4. Just like open wrestling tournaments, separating guys on the same team as long as possible.

The safety net would be to, as much as possible, place Big 12 teams in the same bracket if they only meet once in the conference season. That way you're not potentially playing Houston or Kansas 4 times in a year.

You are exactly right. Attach a value for the strength of the opponent. Say, make a victory over St. John is worth 1.5 points for every point you actually win by. However, this early in the season, it is very hard to place any value.

ND hasn’t had much ever since Digger left. Been a long time.

They actually had some really good teams with their last coach who retired a couple of years ago. Can't think of his name. They went to a few sweet 16's and an elite 8 like 10 years ago. But they've sucked ever since.

It would be interesting if we could get an answer from TJ as to whether he knew that they were competing with Kansas, Tennessee, and Gonzaga for one of those championship spots. Did he think that they had at least the 3rd spot nailed down based on the teams in our pod? Just wondering if this was just the fans that were left in the dark of the format or if the teams competing were also left in the dark. Cause the 2024 results clearly showed pod standings on their website.
Why does anyone care where you technically place in this fake tourney. 3-0 with quality winds is all that matters. We were never destined to win it all.

Sorry if already posted. We broke the format

In what way is seeding and playing brackets any less accurate/fair than fritzing around with silly (subjective, I know) human diddly equations like that used in this tournament?

Serious question, I'm open to be corrected.

In my opinion you go one of two ways with it the above one on Reddit or you go 8 4 team divisions one big 12 team in each to divide that best. 3 game round robin then you take winner from each for a single elimination 8 team bracket format with point differential being the determining factor of each division if they want to go nba league cup style with the tournament. Not perfect I know but would be fun

Cause it would’ve been fun to play Tennessee today rather than Syracuse? And why are you against ISU athletes getting more NIL money?
