Pedestrian Bridge

Not positive on this but I think the school is more or less in charge of the street when it owns property on both sides of it.

Not accurate. The city owns the street and the university owns the land on each side. The university maintains the grass on each side but it is actually city property. A bridge would not change this fact unless the city council changes the open container ordinance. This is why you see Ames PD people at the intersection and not ISU PD. ISU PD would not enforce city ordinances.

University is a major access point to campus for semis, also. Any bridge would have to be high enough to accommodate them.

But I DO like the idea. Wish there was one at south 4th...

Ped bridge - $1,500,000

or

Intersection Improvements to improve ped safety: $100,000

plus

Public safety personnel at each game: $2,000 x 6.5 games/ year for 30 years: $390,000

Total: $400,000

No brainer

Good idea but probably not happening. Clearance would have to be too high for trucks and tunnel would be pricey.

You raise a good point, but what about:

Yearly fender benders along University during games - $$$,$$$?
One Lawsuit for pedestrian being struck by a car - $,$$$,$$$?

I guess I was incorrect. I know street lighting, and stuff like that our operated by the University if they own the land.

I don't want to walk over/under the street when I could ride on a.....Monorail. Seems like the tunnel would be a bad idea considering flooding but a great idea for watching people swim underwater through sewage.

I wish I could take a picture but there is too many people around. But on an idea board for the Gateway Project at FP&M (University Architects), the word "Tunnel" was written..... and crossed out. Pedestrian/Bike Bridge is still up there though

WVU has a train on their "campus". Their campus is ugly, btw, but I do love the monorail idea. We just need another digits or two in front of the $25,000,000 gift.

I thought WVU's campus was beautiful. It is kinda like ISU's but next to a river and in the mountains. WVU was my second choice for college.

Also University avenue is set up to be a levee against the squaw creek so in order to do the tunnel idea they would need to put large floodgates on the tunnel ends.

If they need to use the floodgates, then the lots would probably already be closed. And even if not, then just go back to walking across the street like we do now.

What would it cost to put in a tunnel? FYI, apparently it made sense to someone to give the players have a 100 foot shorter walk to the locker room!

Well sir, there's nothing on Earth like a genuine, bona-fide, electrified, six-car monorail!

I propose a series of pneumatic tubes to deliver tailgaters to the game from the other side of University. Works at my bank REALLY well.

You cant get rid of police presence just because a bridge or tunnel is built. In fact, it would become more important as drivers would stop expecting pedestrians to be in the roadway and police would need to be there to make sure every single pedestrian used the bridge/tunnel and there was no jaywalking.
