You have obviously never done traffic control to understand how completely unrealistic that plan is. You absolutely cannot just toss barricades everywhere because there's an event in the Iowa State Center. Barricades prevent movement of traffic with exception of the intended path. Do you really think the people who live in Ames are going to be cool with their neighborhoods being barricaded off just because of a MBB game? Do you think Ames Emergency services are just going to sign up for access being shut off to places they may need to respond?

In the grand scheme of things mildly inconveniencing people at an entertainment event is low on the list of things Ames is going to worry about. The manpower and cost of implementing something like that suggested plan is enormous. It's one thing for football when law enforcement from all over Central Iowa is providing support. Basketball is a whole different animal.
Yet, by not controlling traffic they also don't have access to places because of the traffic jam it causes by cars being stuck for 30-45 minutes.

A major improvement would only take 4 barricades. Southbound University at Lincoln Way and at Center. Westbound on S 4th at Hazel and Riverside. S 16th / University would still be rough and so would Beach / Mortenson but im sure a simple plan could be devised.

They actually do maintain access because they can control traffic lights.

Those barricades do almost nothing. There are FAR too many bottlenecks with lights around the ISC which prevents getting traffic moved away. You'd need to shut down northbound University from the research park so 30E isn't a bottleneck. You'd need to have all lights on LW green so traffic can move more than a block at a time because students are crossing. Beach only outlets to Mortenson or residential areas. University north from LW is phenomenal for moving traffic away but people get caught up in a "i don't want to backtrack!" mindset and you can't clear traffic both north and east from that intersection simultaneously.

If it was simply they would already be doing it. It isn't simple to shut down the half mile around the ISC. Understandably people overwhelmingly want University to get to 30 and not drive through residential areas.

Football they do an OK job at it because they have significantly more manpower. Basketball that's just not possible without calling in a ton of help for all of an hour worth of work instead of a full day.

When I think of the crappiest jobs in the world, working the parking lots at Hilton Coliseum during basketball season ranks right up there with working at Chucky Cheese.

Whatever they pay those poor folks, it isn't enough.

They could accomplish a lot by restricting traffic on fourth Street to one way going west from the A lots and going east from the C & D lots. And maybe have the right lane exiting from the C & D lots able to go west or east into the lane that will turn south on University. And have the left lane exiting from the C & D lots into the lane that goes east through the intersection or turns left to go north on University.

Much of the problem now is traffic from vehicles that come east from University or west from Beach Road.

Yeah ISU really really screwed up these parking lots. Not enough ways out anymore. Just need to cancel this cytown flop.
This is always one of the biggest issues with perpendicular parking.

I don’t see how exiting the parking lots is such a problem with the number of people that leave Hilton at the under 4:00 media timeout.

It feels like more than 15% of the crowd is doing this whether it’s a weeknight or weekend game and it’s been going on for years. Is it really that much of an advantage leaving 6-8 minutes before those who stay to the end???

Sounds great in theory. Now go find all the people you would need to enforce this plan. I'm sure there will be a LONG line of people wanting to stand outside when it's zero.

Also, people eff this up. They refuse to backtrack and will do whatever they want because they take University to 30 to go west and they don't care who gets in their way!
Well where do they find the people at every other venu I have been to? Its police, its Campus police, its security, its all of that.

Its part of the job. I realize its challenging, but its also part of it.

And like I said, If you go to other venus they force you to go certain directions at corners and driveways by either having people directing traffic or putting up cones etc to force people in certain directions.

It also doesnt take a lot of people to post an actual plan online. With directions on what driveway to use to go what way etc. then enforce those exiting rules with cones etc at the minimum. Which is part of the problem there is no plan, and no one knows anything other than to do whatever it takes to get on University. Which is stupid.

The verdict is still out on Cytown. But the AD has screwed up Hilton parking for years lots of empty spots and making people walk through basically empty lots while parking in BFE. Cytown certainly isn't going to improve the parking situation itll just give you a place for a burger and a beer while waiting for the lots to clear.

You know we have made it as a basketball program when the majority of the bitc**** on the forums after a game is how long it takes to get out of the parking lot. I love it. We have arrived.
I don't this is fair, If it is a **** show trying to get out of the parking lot, it needs to be addressed. We need to complain and draw attention to it if we are the number one team in the country or the 100th ranked team in the country. They need to find a more efficient and effective way to get traffic moving for fans who invest their time, money, and emotional energy into the program.

Going to the women’s game today. Haven’t been to one in 20 years. I’m a season ticket holder for men’s games so I know how parking works there. Don’t have a parking pass for today so are there general parking lots? Any advice or suggestions?

The majority of WBB parking is GA

This is one of the many reasons it is harder and harder not to just watch from the easy chair with a nice bourbon in hand.

If only D4 could have its own exit that everyone must use View attachment 139696
I park in D4 for football game and it's actually faster to turn back into D3 and use that side outlet to get out. People always look at me like I'm nuts turning into a parking lot at point but it's much faster.

Basketball games are a nightmare lately. For the Marquette game I was on university 40 mins before tip and I still missed the first 2 minutes of the game. I've had ok luck leaving this year, but it's been luck. It's a combination of bad lot design (not likely changing) and traffic control people that need some training.

Having a single outlet in a corner of the lot just creates a big funnel that ends up being a mess at that point. Unless you are lucky or an ass you can easily get stuck.

I think this bigger issue is the traffic control. There's a couple guys waving traffic that keep giving priority to not main thorough fares. You need to keep the main traffic routes moving the majority of the time.

The other challenge is foot traffic amongst the vehicle traffic,. You can't walk in between the lots anymore so everyone is walking where vehicles are driving. I've been on that somewhat curvy stretch between where Cy Town is going and C6 and been basically completely surrounded by people with my truck just limping along amongst them. Can't be a safe situation. Maybe that's alleviated when CyTown is done, but if you are walking from Hilton to Jack Trice that route is going to be out of the way so I doubt it helps a lot.

Has anyone sent anything to the AD about this and if so, any responses? Last night was terrible again. Stuck in D5, not moving for over 30 minutes. There are cars going north, cars going south, all in the same lane of traffic.

Getting in was a little better last night, but nobody is checking the parking passes, nor do they have any idea if the lot is already full.

But taking 2 hours to get home for what should be a 45 minute drive (hour with game traffic) is seriously bad for my mental health. There are way more people for football and it isn't this bad.

We are in D5 as well and it’s been bad all season. I was especially disappointed the “best” management people weren’t even directing traffic at the entrance to the lots off of Jack Trice Way before the game. That was very inefficient and unsafe for pedestrians and cars

We park in C5 and we're sitting in line not moving when two Best people in vests walked past is heading west. It looked as if their shift was over and they were heading back in for the night. This was probably 20 minutes after the game when the parking lots were still full.

Holy F. C3 last night. Did not dink around when the game ended, got the car out into the lane from the parking spot right away. Did not move for around 40 minutes. Did not exit the parking lot for almost an hour.

I expect traffic and am not in a big hurry to leave. I don't know what the answer is, but it's hard to imagine it being much worse.
