Liked how the offense looked but CMC kind of got in his own way a couple times with playcalling. It seemed like coming out timeouts and the 1st quarter break he switched things up and tried to get a little too creative instead of just riding his studs.

That might have had something to do with who we were playing (on most occasions - not all). Kyler Murray is just a freak of nature.

Agreed. Pretty good for a guy who's basically just playing QB as a hobby at this point.

That's the thing, we hung with the #5 team in the country without playing our best at all IMO. Tackling was terrible this week, and some of the playcalling was very suspect again this week.

Yep, played much better, a few guys had great games but it wasn't a great overall performance by any means.

Agreed. Pretty good for a guy who's basically just playing QB as a hobby at this point.

It's sort of a retirement gig if that MLB money is guaranteed.

Kyler Murray is a stud. Not many defenses are going to slow him down this year.

Passing game looked great, Zebs the guy going forward. Especially when he’ll be the guy next year.

We were in this game most of the day. It’s exciting to see. This gives me a lot of confidence moving forward with this schedule we have coming up.

It was very encouraging to see the offense perform like we knew they could. As fans, we really needed that. As bad as the game plan was for Iowa--and to be honest, they didn't have a lot of choice in that one having not had a game to figure out their own strengths and weaknesses--this week's game plan was necessarily better suited to the players overall, we knew it was going to be something of a track meet.

Not getting that SDSU game in was a big disadvantage for a road game against Iowa, but it is one that dissipates quickly now as we move ahead. That wasn't ISU football.

Clip the Zips next weekend and prepare for the rest of the grind that is the Big 12 season. I bet we won't see that same strategy of sitting on the ball we saw last weekend the rest of this year (maybe against KSU?). This will be an entertaining team to watch, win or lose, with opportunities to have a really special season.

I think anyone hitting him a bunch is going to beat him. He didn't seem to like contact yesterday. Not that many QBs do (Lanning!) but it seemed to get him distracted and might put stress on him.

Hard to know what Assalley's range is on FGs but like you say, I don't think it's the worst idea to go for it instead of kick/punt in the fringe area between 30 and 40 yard line.

Also, Assalley is 3 for 3 on FGs and 3 for 3 on PATs. Small sample size, but I'll take those percentages.

... What was everyone's opinion of doing the short kickoffs to force fair catches? Was there a wind situation I didn't understand (Francis seems capable of getting touchbacks).

I like the idea of pooch kick to open area of field. Don't know if he tried to kick directly to receiver? Sorta an onsides kick, if it works.

True. But with that OL, his feet, and speedy receivers, he should stay clean most games.

He looked very disciplined in taking what was there, but I wonder if he’ll always be as content. I don’t think our defense was bad, but we didn’t exactly make him a game manager. Better “move forward” execution on defense may be the only way to slow them down.

Yep, it's frustrating, I hope coaches can figure out ways to get DM into space. Of course he's great at tackle-breaking, but I'd rather have him use that after getting into the open and not have him get hammered trying to get past the line of scrimmage.

Plus, a more reliable running game is going to help open up passing possibilities, at least keeping defense a little off-balance between rush/pass. I guess all of that is obvious, it's the "how to do it" that presents the challenge.

Also completely unrelated but the OU fans I sat by were almost unbearable. They were all nice until OU got ahead and then they started making deragatory comments and remarks about ISU. Also, they were packing dip all game long and then one time when the Oklahoma cheerleaders were running with the flags he was like “Daddy likes that”, which was weird. Best part about it was that they didn’t even go to OU, or anywhere remotely close to it. He went to Western Illinois.

Have you ever been to Oklahoma? That place is miserable. One of the worst education systems in the country, and it shows.

Campbell still gets too cute when things are clicking. Whether it's rotating the backs too often, the wildcat, or other gimmicky formations, we always seem to go to these plays when it doesn't make sense. Montgomery was getting into a rhythm and then we put him in a different situation taking the snap. And then run the same play three more times with no variation?

I think we ended up getting the first down on 4th, but we passed to Croney out of the backfield and he came up a half yard short on 3rd. If Montgomery is in, he probably gets two more yards and we avoid another short-yardage situation. I like Croney, but Montgomery needs to be on the field.

Looked like we got a pretty good push when we went under center at the goal line. Montgomery is great at getting a yard when he has a head of steam. The wildcat makes him go into Leveon Bell, hesitation mode. Enough with the BS. Games against rivals and top 5 teams aren't the time to practice.

I have a similar opinion. Didn't we get a little too "cute" at the end of that first drive vs. Iowa, too?

There's a balance between being too predictable and straying too far from what's working.

Yep. ISU's at their best (like most teams) when they get some rhythm in getting lined up, getting off the ball and using all available playmakers.

Lining up in weird formations, and then taking 10 seconds to get everyone shifted to the WC with the QB basically being a decoy, is, um, not that.
