OT - Cutting Cable

If you want everything in a single spot then cord-cutting is not for you. Stick with cable but don't ***** about the cost...

I think it's just merely a matter of time. Vue has all the locals in most big markets. Youtube TV has locals but hasn't come to Des Moines yet. It'll get there but it just looks like it'll take the technology/contracts a few months to get there.

1. Your DVR capability won't be based on the streaming box you buy (AppleTV, Roku... etc.), but will rather be based off what streaming service you purchase (DirectTV Now, Hulu, Playstation Vue... etc.). Some have that capability right now and some don't. Read back through this thread and you'll see people discuss which DVR setup is best per streaming service.

2. When it comes to locals, I do not know of any streaming service yet that provides them, so as of right now, pretty much every cord cutter out there has to just get the locals through the air or use some type of on-demand watching after-the-fact through their channel apps. In my opinion, I've never gotten why people whine so much about antennas unless they are someplace that can't even get a signal even with the best outdoor antenna. Most people who whine about antennas use indoor ones, which is just straight up annoying and stupid unless you are forced to do so by living in an apartment. If you own a house, just pony up and get an outdoor one. I paid $50 for my antenna/mount combo and paid a guy $100 to install everything (he did a great job). One of the best investments I've ever made. For a one-time payment of $150, I now have local channels for life (did mine 8 years ago). Pretty tough to beat. With the setup of it in your house, now that you are a cord-cutter, what else do you use all your coax jacks around the house for anyway other than maybe one dedicated jack possibly for your cable internet? They now work perfect for hooking them all up to an outdoor antenna. Bingo.

Hulu Live has KCCI

HULU Live is awesome. I was using SlingTV prior to signing up for HULU Live for the ISU v Akron Game. I immediately cancelled Sling.

  1. More Channels ( I can watch almost every Cubs game and countless football games on Staurdays)
  2. Better Quality of Picture.
  3. No buffering
  4. Same or extremely comparable price

*I stream on my Xbox so PlayStation Vue isn't an option.

Some questions:

1) How many tv's can you watch simultaneously with one Hulu account?
2) Is Hulu a contract? How long?

(My sling has a perfect picture and no buffering.)

More confirmation Mediascam sucks. Slow internet last night so I did a speed test.... .58GB down.

I think that most of the buffering I was experiencing was due to the Xbox. I've read multiple accounts online of the Xbox version of the SlingTV app being awful. I could Chromecast from my phone to the TV and get a much better picture than when i was hardwired from the Xbox.

To answer your questions:

Their website says you can do 2 simultaneous streams at once per account. I haven't tried this yet to verify, but you should be able to use any 2 devices at the same time.

No contract. It's month by month. $43 dollars per month w/ no commercials for the on-demand content. This includes all the sports channels that you pay extra for w/ Sling + Comcast and Several of the Fox Sports, CBS Sports, NBC Sports.

The only channel in noticed that was missing from the live portion was Comedy Central, although you can still watch on-demand shows from Comedy Central using the non-live TV portion of HULU.

I'm absolutely kicking myself for not switching sooner.

I was all set to get rid of Directv. We moved up a category in internet speed. Did free trial of Sling and were prepared to go with the orange and blue package. Called Directv to cancel and they dropped their price down to the cost of Sling (but with more channels).

We live in the country and internet speeds can vary. We would get periodic buffering on Netflix and HBO Go. We would have missed the DVR if we went with Sling. I just wish I'd called Directv sooner.

Anybody on here using Directv Now? It looks to be really competitive with Dish TV's Sling. But I'm curious for anyone who's using it how many TV's you can use simultaneously with one account? I get 3 with Sling so looking to see if its similar.

I'm very interested in Hulu but I've heard in several places the menus just suck. Clearly not a problem for you, huh? No issues on that front?

Once you learn where to look for stuff it's better but the menu isn't great. I'm sure there will be some changes to it soon so that it's easier to search the live content. Right now it's just all clumped together with the on-demand content.

The only other issue that I've noticed is that sometimes when sports programs run past their end time, it switches to the next scheduled show for that channel at the scheduled end time. You then have to search for the game you were watching which can be a pain.

I have been using DirectTV Now since last December. I love it. I have zero buffering and get all the sports channels. I was a early adopter so I get the $60 package for $35, plus got a free Apple TV 4. This summer, they added HBO for free.

I tried SlingTV first and it was just okay, then PS Vue. Great picture and price, but hated the interface. I will stay with DTVN and don't miss the $140 Direct TV bill. I use antenna and Tablo for local TV viewing and recording.

With Dish's most recent software update our boxes have been terrible, so I'm looking at making the switch. What are people's opinion on antenna on the roof vs in the attic? My attic opening is very tight so I'd like to go to the roof but I wasn't sure how weather would affect the antenna.

Depends on where you live. I get all the local channels, including Fox, KDSM, KDMI and ION and I only use rabbit ears. However, I can see the towers in Alleman. All in digital HD.

You might want to look at the flat antennas that mount on a window or wall. They are rated based on distance and some come with amplifiers. If you want to record, I use the Tablo box.

Based on the antenna websites I need something more than rabbit ears. I just didn't know if I'm better off going to the attic rather than mounting on the satellite post already on the roof.

Anybody use YouTube TV? I'm tempted but 30 FPS for sports would really bother me.

Also, let me see if we have talked about all of these options: Sling, Vue, Hulu, YouTube, DirecTV Now... Are there any other options?

The flat antennas are really made for picking up UHF signals. They are not designed for VHF. I have a flat antenna in DFW and it took some work to pick up WFAA 8 even though the towers are in the same location as the majority of the other major networks.

PSA: Hulu Live now has support for at least the third gen Rokus. The last streaming devices they are working on are Samsung TVs/Blu-Ray players.
