Olympics - (Spoiler Alert!)

Re: Shawn Johnson - (Spoiler Alert!)

A little "tub thumping" is in order here... I get knocked down, but I get up again, you ain't never gonna keep me down...

I know it's "only" athletics, but I'm proud of her and I'm proud she's from Des Moines. She showed courage and resilience.
Thanks for getting that stuck in my head:sad:

Awesome news for Shawn. She's done such a great job with all the expectations, and she has performed so well, and with class. Awesome!:notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

Re: Shawn Johnson - (Spoiler Alert!)

Just think, if she goes to London she could win more medals than any US gymnast in history.

I wouldn’t say that...gymnast are typically in their prime during the younger ages (see Chinese gymnast), and Shawn will be 20, and her body will be a huge obstacle for her.

:notworthy::notworthy:Way to come thru Shawn! I can't imagine the pressure after all those competitions to get gold on her last chance. Gotta be all smiles in the Hy-Vee board room today!

I don't know if you guys are joking or not, but I think that Shawn J getting this gold medal is a HUGE deal. Not just for her, but for all of central Iowa. Now, she'll probably never have to work a day in her life. She will just be able to sit back and RAKE in the endorsement money. For Iowa, imagine all the publicity it will bring to our great state. I'm sure that the top gymnastics coaches in the world will descend about Iowa looking for the next Shawn Johnson. Will the find her? Probably not. But will the find a wonder place to live, great people, earthy aromas, and great food. DEFINITELY. Congrats Shawn.

Pardon my dissenting opinion, but 3 months from now, nobody outside of the DM Register will care. It's arguable that many outside of the pool of Iowans and Iowan expats really cares in the first place. It's huge IN Iowa, for now, but that makes it barely a blip on the national radar. The caucuses ended months ago, and that's really about the only time anyone outside of Iowa cares about what goes on in it.

Well that, and Cyclone athletics

Saw on ESPN web page that Shawn Johnson finally got Gold. You gotta love her. Coming so close and yet being such a great sport. Glad she got the Gold in the Beam.

Accidentally heard it on the radio, so I figured I might as well ask if there's a video online of it.

Count me as one of the few Iowan's that is sick of this story. I'm happy she has done good and it's not her fault that she get's all the coverage but I'd much rather hear about Lolo.

Just a few reasons:

#1 For the last month, all we've heard about is SJ. It's like she is the greatest olympian of all time before she even went.

#2 Because of all this coverage I think a lot of people just assumed that she would win gold in every event. When that didn't happen they started making excuses like "China is using 10 year olds", "The judges don't like SJ's style", etc.

#3 I've heard co-workers say things like "They should raise money for the family since they are really struggling and they have a 3rd mortgage on their house". This makes me want to puke.SJ is going to make millions but it was Lolo who donated money to the flood victims. It's hard to feel bad for a 16 year old driving a Land Rover. Lolo has had a lot more interesting and tough life but there are 10 stories about SJ for every one about Lolo.

Once again, I have nothing against SJ but the crush that WHO-TV and the DM register have is on the verge of sickening.

I agree with most of your points....especially on Lolo......

Another thing I just thought about. They were building a statue of her for the Iowa hall of pride before she even left for the Olympics.

Wasn't that statue finished before she left?

Not to mention the butter SJ at the state fair.

She was a great gymnast before the Olympics:

Shawn has completed a 2.5-twisting Yurchenko, does a standing full (back flip with a full twist) on beam, and a tucked double-double (two flips with two twists) on floor. Shawn is probably the only athlete in the world to have three "G" level elements on three events. (In the code of points, skills are arranged in different levels, "A" skills being basic skills, "G" skills being the most difficult elements. No element has been given above a "G" rating in the Code of Points to date.) On bars, her double twisting double layout dismount is her "G" element, on beam, it's her full twisting double tuck dismount, and on floor it's her tucked double twisting double tumbling pass. On vault she is one of only three women in the world, the other two being Jade Barbosa (Brazil) and Cheng Fei (China), to complete a 2 1/2 twisting layout Yurchenko.

Shawn handled the runner up role better than Nastia did just from watching their faces. Smiley poker face Shawn should be in some good ads in the future.

Re: Shawn Johnson - (Spoiler Alert!)

Hey hos - why don't you track down monkeybrow while you're out there - it's been ages since I've heard from him (just assuming with every single Union Jack avatar that he's ever had that he's from out there...)

You'd be surprised.

I agree, she was and we've had hundreds of great athletes with long lists of accomplishments.

I'm not sure we have that many with such a list of international accomplishments.

In any case, why do you have to rain on everyone else's parade. Just ignore the coverage of SJ then and pay attention to the athletes you care about.

I don't know why people can't just be happy for Shawn and leave it at that instead of always feeling the constant need to rip down her accomplishments. First, she's done something I'm pretty confident in saying no one on this board has ever done - won a gold and three silvers in the Olympics. So yes, she deserves all the pub that she's getting. Second, as to why Shawn's getting all the pub and Lolo's not - gymnasts have ALWAYS been more marketable than track stars. Just the way it is.

Re: Shawn Johnson - (Spoiler Alert!)

Well I guess the DM Register can stay in business now that their paparazzi like coverage of her has been backed up in the form of a Gold medal. I'm fully expecting a special-edition golden paper for tomorrow's edition:wink:

All joking aside, it's good that she was able to get 4 medals, including the Gold. Impressive.

I'm surprised Channel 13 hasn't just gone All Shawn, All the Time.
