ISU is in a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation if Penn State does well next year:

Narrative should be, “Wow this middle of the road XII roster was really competitive at the top of the B1G. Hmmm.”

Instead it will probably be, “Look what Matt Campbell was able to achieve once he finally escaped the shackles of poverty in Ames, IA.”
Iowa state should have been 10-2 at worst this season. Bad coaching(Colorado and Cincinnati ) and injuries on defense really hurt this team from achieving what it was capable of. People are really downplaying the talent ISU had this season.

I am confident ISU gets no flowers from the media, even if they were to win a game in the playoffs or whatever.

It is exceptionally unlikely, given both the competency of players and their schedule, that Penn State is mid/bad next year. But optically, absolutely nothing is better for Iowa State than the narrative at the end of the year being "can Campbell win outside of Ames?"

Remaining possible holdovers down to: Ka'Mori Moore, LaMarcus Hicks Jr, Ethan Stecker, Vontroy Malone, Ryver Peppers, Dontrell Holt, Derek Jensen, Garrett Rutledge?
Isn't next week the deadline to announce? I don't remember the exact date, but I thought it was around 1/16

Yep, a healthy team this year had a real opportunity for a conference championship and a playoff berth. Excuse me while I go throw up.

Who is left from Wazzu that we may be interested in? I thought they had a good DE (Terrell) who’s still in the portal uncommitted. Anyone else?

Next year PSU does not play tOSU, Indiana, Oregon, or Iowa. They play Michigan but that program is in turmoil. They play USC, but it's at home. They have a legitimate chance to go 12 - 0. You take ISU's best players and add in some PSU holdovers, they should most likely be favored in every game. So yeah, Campbell has fallen into a dream scenario.
And will lose at least two games as the favorite which was his norm at Iowa State.

Easily under the “poor coaching/prep” category.

To me that game was way worse than Cincy. That one was right after our big injuries on defense and those guys were still getting their footing.
The thing that got me at late in the arizona state game was what I thought was a bad time management decision. Clones get a first down with maybe 35-40 seconds to go around the 30 and decide to clock it. My thought was with the struggles of the offense that day getting in synch and maybe they'd need all 4 cracks at it to keep moving the chains. I really hated that 1st down spike.

I may be wrong on the time remaining, but realy felt they needed to keep throwing and giving Rocco as many opportunities as possible. That game was also when I started to realize, something is wrong with Rocco.

PSU is not going 12-0. Lol. How is Michigan in any more "turmoil" than Penn St. right now? They have a proven, very solid new HC. They're bringing back Underwood and Jordan Marshall and haven't lost any key players to the portal aside from a starting LB. And the odds are very good they'll still make some big additions. PSU has lost over 40 guys to the portal and is replacing them with a bunch of ISU guys, good players for sure but from the same team that went 8-4 against an easier schedule in 2025 than they'll have in 2026. At Michigan, at Washington, USC at home will be very tough. Meanwhile breaking in a new HC, new coordinators, new staff, new system.

I agree that next year's schedule sets up about as ideally as MC could've hoped for in year one, but 12-0 is dreamland.

I'm personally guessing they go 9-3 and miss the playoffs in an underwhelming first year

Not to mention it’s Matt you’re talking about. He will drop at least a couple he shouldn’t. Like Minnesota or Northwestern.

I am too lazy to do the research, but here is what I think:

Penn State no doubt has some good players returning.

I think they lost most of the incoming recruits.

When you combine what they have returning with our very best players - I suspect they will be very good next year.

I do not think CMC and his staff were incompetent. They are good. Every team makes some calls/decisions they wish they had not made.

Some have suggested PSU has a weak schedule. If that is true, I expect them to win a lot of games - and some of our guys will be stars.

Mixed emotions from me on whether I want them to win or not. Part of me says - yes, we had good players! The other part of me says - screw you traitors.

1st half of Cincinnati, Arizona State, and Colorado losses all fell on coaching. Heck, the BYU 2nd half was a coaching blunder losing like 31-10 in the 2nd half.

Then timing of our slide leads me again to speculate about when Cambell's eye started to wander towards "Happy" Valley
