***Official Olympics Discussion***

Completely different situation. For one, football teams are hard to directly compare due to the small number of games played and lack of direct competition. Gymnastics? You know exactly how well everyone did against everyone else because their scores are right there. In football there are all kinds of margin for error- from biased pollsters to faulty computer models. Gymnastics? All just have the scores they just got.

Gymnastics has faulty scoring as well. While it's a lot closer to perfect to the BCS, there is still some fault. There's been controversy before in events like this because of judging where the system should be a lot better.

I don't think there is a lot of difference besides like you said, the scoring system. If Wieber didn't make mistakes, she would be in the finals. People would still be complaining in some fashion if the top 24 made it.

It'll be interesting to see the final details of the new championship for college football and see how they go about it.

I agree that the system for choosing the competitors for the all-around is dumb, but everybody knew the rules going in. That said, I don't get all of the hand wringing over poor Jordyn Wieber. She made some visible mistakes that opened the door for Aly Raisman. I think the focus should be on the clutch performance that Raisman gave on her floor routine. She was the last to go, she knew she had a shot at the all around if she nailed her performance and that's exactly what she did.

Did anyone see the Romanian gymnasts in the late night session? I think it was during the floor exercise, but i could be wrong. Anyways, one of the gymnasts had just finished their routines and there was the awkward silence while we were waiting on the score.... This prompts the older announcer guy to say "Do they give bonus points for being sexy?" ...waaaaaay creepy

This Gymnastics controversy exemplifies my opinion that any event where the winner is determined by a Judge's opinion is not a true sport.

Events like:
Gymnastics,
Equestrian,
Synchronized Springboard diving (or just diving in general).
Rhythmic gymnastics
Figure Skating
etc, etc,

Yeah, I couldn't quite figure that out either. She was brutally underscored especially when Gabby ended up out of bounds and practically landed on the other side of the arena.

IIRC, she was score two tenths BELOW Gabby. And Gabby took a good 5 extra steps.

So ****** at f****** MSN - had to open a different browser at work today (that I rarely use) to access a program, and MSN was the homepage. Huge spoiler about the men's gymnastics as the glaring headline. Get home and a leftover popup (that I forgot about) from my days of using messenger spoiled the swimming news.

What the hell is wrong with them? Yahoo has the decency to use generic headlines and say *spoiler alert*. If NBC wants me to watch their ****** tape-delayed primetime coverage at night, how about they stop blaring the results everywhere you turn?

Just got back from a local bar that had espn on one of their tvs. Just happened to look at it while they were giving olympic event updates. Spoiled men's gymnastics and two swimming events. Damn.

I can't speak for figure skating, synchronized springboard diving, or equestrian, but I can speak for gymnastics. By far the most physically demanding sport I've ever done and it's not even close. Just because there's scoring doesn't mean ****. If you actually know what's going on, you know it's a hell of a lot less subjective than it seems.

The scoring is rather exact, but there's a reason why there's multiple judges. In case one judge misses something (which does happen), there's enough to balance him/her out. It's easy to say what you just said, but once you actually understand what's going on and how the scoring works, you realize it's not that subjective. There's a little subjectivism to it, but multiple judges aims to get rid of a lot of it For example, falling off an apparatus is an automatic 1 point off. Taking a medium sized step on your dismount is 0.3 points off.

There is a code of points in gymnastics, code of skill. If you know what to look for and you're a judge, you know exactly what skill they're doing and what level it is. An A skill is the easiest that you can get points for, up to G as the hardest. You get 0.1 points for an A, and 0.7 for pulling off a G skill. Take these points, and then add 10 to it. And then finally subtract points for your obvious mistakes like falling off the apparatus, not sticking a landing, almost falling off whatever apparatus you're on and doing something that's not a skill to maintain your balance or strength, or whatever it is. That's your final score.

Except that one of the biggest figures in gymnastics said the scoring was crap in some of those scores. Sooooooo.

Yeah, except that doesn't happen that often when you look at how many competitions happen in the world. The ones who do are ****ed up in the head and are usually bribed. The scoring is supposed to be fairly objective..maybe about 95%. The other 5% is supposed to be offset by multiple judges and not make much of a difference. There's a reason why you don't have one or two guys only judging.

The scoring is very exact on what to look for still. You could say the same thing about many sports who call fouls. Oh let's look at the NBA refs who did the same ****, calling ******** fouls, and whatever they could do to make sure they at least covered their bets. Or how about the CIA doing an investigation into NFL refs cheating the same way in the 80s, or soccer refs in Russia doing the same thing?

It happens in many sports, not just these.

And refs are called out in those sports as well. I think you've been around for a game thread or two around here. :D

I understand that they look for certain things and that's fine, I just listened to the dude last night and he had some solid points I thought. No biggie (well, for me. I'm sure that chica would not agree.).

Yep, they're called out in all sports. There are obviously refs in pretty much every sport who are full of ****. Scoring is scoring, even if it's ******** or you think it's ******** (like stepping out of bounds). At the end of the day, you have to abide by them. What's ******** about this year is how only 2 athletes from each country can compete for an all-around gold. Sucks big time, but it's life. Can't do much about it this time around.
