***Official Olympics Discussion***

well, she'll still be competing in all four events. Very interesting to see what her score is compared to Gabby and Aly.........as well as the other 22 gymnasts "better" than her.

ugh. That was painful. Kudos to her for being very gracious in the interview. The announcer and the old guy seem to think she was greatly underscored. Good luck for Gabby I suppose. Conspiracy!!

Stupid rule IMO...she will have a better score than a lot of gymnasts that make the final. Why should she be penalized for being on a great team. Take the best overall scores regardless of the team...the all around is about the individual competitor and should have nothing to do with what team she is on. Really unfortunate and dumb.

+1.

I think that's the mindset I'd get her to have if I was her coach. Go out and show the world that you are indeed the best gymnest in the world by posting the best scores of anyone.

Bela Karolyi tends to be outspoken. Since he's (at least) one of the greatest gymnastic coaches ever, he's earned the opportunity to say whatever he wants on that subject.

How would it go over if the committee in charge of the all-around were to open the door for her to compete? Positive reaction? Negative?

this is the equivalent of every basketball conferences getting two automatic bids, regardless of quality. And obviously someone like the Big East's 3rd or 4th best team is likely better than lot of other smaller conference's 1st place team.

bolded. I do think this probably results in changing the rule though, not that it will help Wieber.

Has the best overall score in the finals ever been posted by someone not eligible to win a medal? That would be something to see.

yup, I mean, I'm sure the announcers will keep us up to date on that information....if I were her, I'd totally get in that mindset and try to still be the best. If she were to still get the highest score, I bet some changes in how they qualify might occur.

another example of 'spreading it around'. top 24 should qualify, period. this isn't about 'being fair', this is about the best being allowed to be the best. shameful rule.

One of the NBC announcers (not Karolyi) also said the same thing, so it wasn't just him. I think to allow her to compete now would be seen as a negative, but in reality, if you, as another country, weren't afraid of her, you would laugh at it or criticize it as American favoritism. But obviously, as the reigning world champ, they would go crazy mad if they allowed her in.

but on the other hand, if the IOC turns a blind eye at documents stating the Chinese are entering 12 and 14 year olds into competition and winning gold, letting Jordyn compete is small potatoes.

Just win. Stay balanced on the balance beam and stay in bounds. Do your job and you're in. No one else to blame but herself. Get it together for the team competition and do your best to help the team win.

Anyone else watch the Missy Franklin interview on ESPN? Turning down endorsements currently in order to compete for her high school team. Didn't want to move just to train, wanting to get the most out of her high school experience. Seems like a pretty level headed girl.

ironically, this rule is similar to the BCS "only 2 teams from one conference can go to the BCS rule unless some crazy **** happens".

I remember people defending the BCS for it when Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas were top 5 at one time. Irony.

Completely different situation. For one, football teams are hard to directly compare due to the small number of games played and lack of direct competition. Gymnastics? You know exactly how well everyone did against everyone else because their scores are right there. In football there are all kinds of margin for error- from biased pollsters to faulty computer models. Gymnastics? All just have the scores they just got.
