***OFFICIAL 2026 WEATHER THREAD***

"In the past, war ships carried iron cannons, which required cannon balls nearby. The cannon balls were stored in a square pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. In order to prevent the sixteen balls from rolling away, a metal plate called a monkey with sixteen round indentations was secured near the cannon. As iron rusts quickly, the plate was made of brass. Whilst the rusting problem may have been solved, brass contracts much more and quicker than iron in cold weather. As a consequence, when the temperature was extremely cold, the brass indentations would shrink and the cannon balls would roll off the monkey. The temperature was therefore cold enough to [...]"

Well, you know the rest of the story.

-10 here in North Ames right now. Didn’t think the wind was that bad but saw a few garbage cans tipped over. I know it’s cold as it seems I gotta p more often.

Oooh, this actually reminds me of a huge, weird pet peeve of mine! Until the last 2 years, I had never heard or seen the word "slippy" to describe slick roads. I see the City of Ames use "slippy" all the time in their social media posts and it drives me nuts! It's "SLIPPERY!" Right?!?!?

If you google it looks like both could be used, but in that specific context, slippy is probably more correct.

Quiet day in the office, just the way I like it. Took 30 seconds to leave my car, carrying a fountain pop and that was enough for my hands to hurt.

We run a large humidifier in our house during the winter because it gets incredibly dry and I hate having a sore throat, dry sinus, static electricity, etc.

I place the humidifier below the largest cold air return to try to circulate the moist air throughout the house as much as possible and I set the humidity level for 35% during the winter.

When it gets this cold, our furnace runs non-stop so the humidifier has to run non-stop as well to try to keep the moisture level up. I can't believe how frequently I have to keep filling the humidifier.

This sucker is pumping several gallons of water each day into our air. It's a pain to keep filling, but it makes the house so much more comfortable that it's worth it.

We used to have a humidifier attachment to our furnace, but our water is so hard the line kept getting plugged, so I said screw it and just bought a large portable humidifier which seems to work much better.

We just got a 4 gallon and on days that get down below 20, it takes just under a day to empty out. Makes a huge difference in the comfort level of our home.

It's a thing with the police social media -- kind of like airplanes on treadmills here.

Our thermometer shows -12. Not happy about that.

I have a blood donation appt tomorrow morning. Hope my blood doesn’t run cold on the way there. Also that my car will start when I’m done.
I too have one of those. Solid blood is way easier to transport.

It’s not the cold. It’s the humidity.

-15.9 in CR currently. The dog was not amused when I let him out this morning. I've never seen him pee so quickly.
