***OFFICIAL 2026 WEATHER THREAD***

I will be out in it caring for animals all day I imagine. Even using 500 watt tank heaters it's impossible to keep water in front of them with that kind of wind at those temperatures.

Oh well, we get a spell or two of weather like this every winter. It's not bad if you don't have to deal with tons of snow to go along with it.

I hoping the hogs keep drinking and I don’t have a line freeze on me.

Will ISU cancel classes?
How often does ISU? The only day I remember from 2010-2015 was when they canceled afternoon classes as I was walking out of my final class for the day. One of those days where the sky is just yellow as the storm came in. 0 chance I'd being going to class tomorrow if I was a student.

Small feed out operation (150 head) when I was young. No line just a large tank with a heating element underneath and a float bowl for drinking. Every night right before lights out had to check on the element. Also had heat lamps and they slept on straw. Had to change that straw 3 times a week with a pitchfork. They didn't make enough Irish Spring to get the stench off.

When I was a kid, and it got old, dad would tell me to go water the cattle and then hand me the ax. Had to chop ice so there was enough space so cattle could stand there and drink what I ran. Old days of the heating pipe having diesel that gelled up and dad had to get a little #2 or kerosene to blend it down to get it to start a fire.

I have a blood donation appt tomorrow morning. Hope my blood doesn’t run cold on the way there. Also that my car will start when I’m done.

Currently -39F feels like temp here in the Twin Cities. Great bourbon night.

House has been periodically making those wood contracting snaps. Did go out for a 2 mile walkabout in Theo Wirth Park, mostly in the woods so out the wind but, damn, the trees were swaying in the wind gusts of up to 37 mph. I have flip open glove/mittens I had to flip open to take a photo of an owl and, man, you don't want to have bare fingers out for more than a moment.

At least we aren't getting the ice storm of the ages that the south is gonna get. Power out for weeks it sounds like.

I saw something that the last major ice/winter storm in Houston led to over 100k houses having pipes burst. Power out for 1 day sounds horrible let alone days or weeks.

My outdoor thermometer is not working today so cannot verify with those lying Intertubes that it's one below outside, but it's a toasty 54 F right here in the home office.

Virtual classes for everybody.
