Am I going to need to get my snowblower out of the shed?
Depends on where you live. In the Des Moines area, NWS has 1-2 inches of snow forecasted. Not entirely sure why DSM is under winter storm watch… if you live in western Iowa, then a snowblower might be needed.

Winds. The worst is experience I ever had driving in Des Moines was less than 2 inches of snow and 50 mph winds.

This will be a legit blizzard. Be thankful we don't have any snow on the ground.

Don't focus on the forecast snow amount so much. All we need is 'some'. We'll have enough. I see anywhere from 2-7" across central/western/northern Iowa. Although, good luck ever measuring that.

Winds going 55-60+mph is the equalizer... the story here Tuesday night into Wednesday. Outside of town, you'll have whiteouts, extremely dangerous travel conditions due to blowing snow/drifting snow. I'm unsure on roads becoming impassable due to our lack of current snow.

Wind alone is of concern for property damage with its strength.

Don't dilly or dally on your way home from the game Tuesday night. Conditions worsen over western Iowa around 9... I35 corridor around midnight.

Driving from Waterloo to St Louis Wednesday morning/early afternoon, probably far enough east that it'll just be fighting the wind more than anything, right?

Is this blizzard going to cause school cancellations/delays in the Des Moines metro? I’m just trying to plan a bit

One other notable I should have gotten: 4-9-1973 - 57 mph wind gust. My mother reminds me of this one often.

Others where wind gusts were not recorded include the Armistice Day blizzard 11-11-1940. Sustained winds were 44 mph (which is hella impressive)

This is getting up there with some of the best wind/blowing snow combos on record for Des Moines.

Worst would be right away/closest to Waterloo. On the edge where snow amounts really drop and there's weaker winds compared to western Iowa.
