***Official 2025 Weather Thread***

Live on a cul-de-sac around 50th in WDSM, and roads weren't that bad. The ice under the snow was worse but Mills Civic wasn't awful to drive on, though very bare of cars since WF allowed WFH.

Cant you call in sick or something? If they don't care about your safety you need to find a new employer.

We probably need some laws to make employers liable in situations like this.

I know there are some jobs where, yes, you can call in sick, but it'd be really easy for employers to let you go when the time came.

I get the sentiment, but depending on your field and general job market, that's not always a realistic option at any one time. As someone in higher Ed, online classes have actually been a godsend, because previously my University presidents almost never closed campus or cancelled classes, because "students are paying for classes, we owe it to them to be open." Now that classes can be moved online, thankfully my current admin is much more willing to actually close campus and have virtual classes.

Not always that easy for people to just up and change.
Totally understand you can not just up and change, but this should be eye opening. If your employer does not care enough about your safety they will not be there for you when you need them. Of course there are always the few where your attendance is most important, EMT personnel, jobs where animals are dependent on you (livestock) and such. I just can imagine working for an employer that will put safety over production.

Don't thank me too quickly. We did get their driveway cleared early this morning but they refused our help on the travel. They just texted me and they are most of the way there. Sounds like the crews are doing a pretty good job on the arterial highways they are taking.
Hope whoever is driving isn't also texting.

That was my thought as well. However I have only ever read texts from her (who would be driving) and this text definitely looked to be from someone who doesn't text (randomly placed commas and periods, etc.). I'm confident he sent this.

Some people's workplaces are not understanding. Don't ask me how I know.
I get it. Unless your job is essential though I don't understand.

Now the insurance companies have to fit the bill on all these totaled vehicles becuase people can't follow simple directions or we have terrible employers who can't let people have a simple day off.

The irony of the situation I mentioned above (it's not me, but someone I know) is that the person works for an insurance company.

Hate to tell you, but most corporations will not be there for you when you need them. Sometimes they'll have some nice gestures, but they will cut you loose the moment you aren't useful to them. Private employers are probably a little better.

I get that with corporations and yes, the respect and care for employees has gone down hill for the 30 years. Like you said, private employers are most likely to have more compassion, however the pay and benefits are not always as good. I guess that you have to choose between money/benefits and respect/value. I have been out of the full time job market for about 10 years now. Luck I can be pretty selective on who and what company/mom and pop company I want to work at. I was luck enough to survive and retire with a pretty good pension. That can always change though with the current way our government is going.
