Holding your arms straight up while an opponent bull drives for a layup just doesn't work. It does nothing to stop them, and the refs will still call you for a foul if there is any contact.

not to mention the offensive player with his hand extended with the clearing motion

BYU can look like a really efficient, athletic team all game and then forget how to dribble real quick.

He traveled before he called timeout. BYU was fouled on that shot. BYU is getting hosed.

Hall just stood there while that loose ball was within reach. A faster reaction at the very least forces a held ball.
