*** Official 2025 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Unfortunately I don't think Long has a path to big league playing time in Chicago with the talent blocking him right now. I would not be surprised if he is used as part of a trade at some point.
Might be tough for Long to get at bats depending on who Cubs add this off-season to play DH/RF.

But if Cubs continue to platoon Busch, Long could be RH bat at 1B. Same goes if Ballesteros earns starting DH.

Long has also played a little bit of 3B in the minors, so he has some position flexibility.

Well there goes that idea
Cubs were never going to be in on him. All the big names will sign then they will scoop up some project on a 1 year deal like they always do. They will probably say Shota is their big off season signing too.

I do think Shota taking the offer was unexpected from the front office. I imagine that put a damper on them signing someone like Cease, Valdez or Gallen.

I think the FO came to the conclusion they would rather pay the $22M for one season than the amount on the balance of the contract.

If he reverts back to 2024 Shota he’ll come out ahead which I think the team is fine with. But locking in on the second half of 2025 Shota would of been a hard pill to swallow

Agreed, that is the thing that worries me the most though is has the league figured him out now and his performance on the backend of 2025 going to be more of the norm or was he playing hurt or needs to work on something with his delivery in the offseason to get back to the better version of him that we have seen. I was really hoping he would turn down the QO to use that money elsewhere as I have a feeling the FO is going to use this as their reason for not adding another top end of the rotation caliber pitcher this offseason. Even with Shota they still need to add another high end starter but I have a feeling they'll do that same thing as they always do and try to find a cheap reclamation project to fill that need.

Rogers made a great point on that. It was pretty much a given he’d take it. With the shutdown looming he can just go back to Japan in 27 if necessary.

Obligatory, I'll believe it when I see it.

That said, this is great to hear. I know the lockout is looming, but as of now:
1. the tax penalties have reset by staying under in 2025
2. Tons of money coming off the books in 2027
3. Can probably reset the tax after 2026 between free agents and potential lockout. If there even is still a tax.

In the end, I will be fine as long as they go up to the tax number (unlike last year), but would love to see them go over it.

My ideal offseason before today looked something like this:

  • Kazuma Okamoto
  • Pete Fairbanks
  • Trade for a SP that we talked about at the deadline

But this would change things and open up the option to sign a SP as well.

Edit: and obviously smaller RP and bench pieces

must be the beginning of the offseason, Cubs expected to have money to spend

I'll check back in in March and see if any money was actually spent

If a big reason not to spend is because not wanting to spend long term dollars because of the upcoming CBA then why not offer up some big 1 year deals to some guys where it makes sense. The Cubs have money to spend and the Ricketts and FO just haven't been aggressive in tapping into the money they could spend. I still think they could go in on a big multi-year contract for the right starter either in free agency or acquiring one in a trade and still have payroll flexibility after the new CBA to spend with new parameters. We surely have the prospect capital to pull off a trade and take on some money in the process too.

I doubt they go big on a position player signing. I could see that being a deal with someone overpaying on a 1 year deal with maybe some options for something to extend it or opt outs but they aren't going in on the kind of deal for someone like Tucker and probably even Bregman will likely get which will be high AAV multi-year deals. The biggest/most expensive contract they have on the books after the 2026 season is Swanson. Everyone else is basically team controlled, free agents, or has some kind of option so it's not like they can't take on at least 1 big multi-year deal and if they do a starting pitcher would be the best position to invest at.
