I’ll repost what I said in the 2024 thread and thought we need an update.

PCA with a beautiful swing on a double to left center and Amaya goes yard both in the 4th.

I keep reading the Aranado stuff and it really makes no sense to me. Let’s say the Cards cover enough to put his cost down the comparable to Hoerner. Honestly everything considered I’d rather have Hoerner. Only way I’m wrong is Aranado has a huge resurgence year. Personally I think Shaw out produces both of them by year’s end. So why give up prospects just to make a move. If it’s for insurance on Shaw it seems like we’ve already made big upgrades over last year with the bench guys? I know he’s a big name but still.

Totally agree. I think Arenado is great, or was, but he doesn’t make sense on this roster.

They won't trade for Arenado. Cards aren't going to trade him in division without getting a haul in return. I'm not even entertaining the thought that it could happen because it won't.

They would deal him for a fungo if they could get a taker.

That Kris Bryant trade really worked out well.
Have to hope Kilian pans out at this point and so far from what we have seen I'm not too optimistic. He has some good pitches and a fastball that can touch 97-98 but he has troubles with control. He turns 28 in June, makes me wonder if he can't figure it out as a starter if its time to convert him to a bullpen arm where he can just go all out on the fastball and mix in his other pitches that maybe he could be more effective that way than having to navigate through 5+ innings.

Still pisses me off that this is the end result of Canario. He can play all 3 OF positions and showed some power in the minors. He was on a big hot streak in Iowa in 2023 when he got called up and sat on the bench for about 2 weeks before he got an AB. Maybe he is a bust for the Mets or they wind up cutting him before opening day but this is a classic case of the Cubs sitting on a guy they could have traded for more than cash just a year or 2 ago.

I haven't watched any spring training games but following the recaps and box scores. It's just spring training but good to see Alcantara, Amaya, Busch, and PCA all hitting well so far. It will be interesting to see who gets that 5th rotation spot. Sounds like Keller could make a case to make the opening day roster if he keeps pitching well and it doesn't sound like Rea is a lock to be the 5th guy unless he earns it otherwise he'll be a long relief/spot starter. Keller is one of those guys if he doesn't make the 26 man could opt out and find an opportunity elsewhere. Palencia touched 101 mph on his fastball, now if he can finally locate his pitches effectively that would be a nice weapon to have in the bullpen.

"As for the injury, it turns out it was an osteoma – a benign bone tumor, growing off of another bone – that was irritating his neck when he’d pitch.* Googling suggests they are not necessarily a serial or recurrent issue, are kinda flukey, and don’t necessarily present future concerns (depending on what sparked the new growth in the first place). Moreover, per The Athletic article, in Brown’s case, the doctor indicated it would resolve of its own volition in a matter of months, which is what in fact did happen. It just required waiting."

Just stop with the Arenado talk. Dude still has some value on the field, but it is NOWHERE near his contract value. Let the Cards stew in that expensive mess for 3 more years.

I’d much rather see them wait till the trade deadline and see what’s available and fill a need rather than commit big money for insurance.

Other than Bleacher Nation who thinks we are in on just about everyone all the time who really is peddling Arenado as an option because I haven't seen anyone else saying they should get him? I don't really think there was anything serious going involving him. As for the trade deadline I hope the Cubs are actually in a good spot for a playoff berth and not like the last 2 years where they sucked early on then showed just enough signs of life that the FO thought they could do some CPR with some cheap trades to possible revive their playoff chances. If they are going to commit big money at the deadline they better be securely in a position to compete to justify it and not just holding onto a thread of hope they can get hot after sucking for a good stretch of the 1st half of the season. The roster is pretty much set for now and will have to let things play out to figure out what holes still need addressed who may realistically be available at some point.
