Iowa State travels to Fargo, ND on Saturday for a matchup with the NDSU Bison for our final tuneup before the Southern Scuffle. The big matchup for this meet will be Mike Moreno taking on Steven Monk at 165 pounds. Last year Monk pinned Moreno at our dual against them and was the #5 seed at NCAAs (he ended up finishing in R12). Other than that I see a lot of matches that we should win but are in no way sure things.

*Rankings are Intermat/D1Wrestling/AWN

Note: The ranking services weren't sure how to split up Lelund/Tanner/Boaz at 174 and 184, which is why there is a mix of rankings among those three. Right now most places are ranking Lelund at 174 and Tanner at 184

Weight by weight thoughts:
125: Hall is starting to come into his own but still has a problem with losing to mediocre guys. He's got a mediocre guy here and I see a win. Possibly even a nice cement mixer into a pin
Iowa State 3 - 0 NDSU

133: LaValle just dropped down to 133 lbs very recently and is looking to do some damage. Bauer's tour of death continues but this is a fairly light stop. I think LaValle wins, hopefully not by major. But probably by major
Iowa State 3 - 4 NDSU

141: Cathey bumped up to 141 to make room for LaValle at 141. This is a gut check match for little Moreno. If he is going to do anything this year he needs to win matches like this one and I think he will.
Iowa State 6 - 4 NDSU

149: Goettl has struggled a lot this year but he hasn't been a total bust. Diamond has a losing record against mediocre competition and I think Goettl gets a comfortable win here.
Iowa State 9 - 4 NDSU

157: Molina gets back in to the lineup due to a Nicholson injury. Gray is a 2-2 freshman and I think Molina hits the ground running with a win. But since it is his first match back on varsity I'll have my fingers crossed.
Iowa State 12 - 4 NDSU

165:I like big Moreno and I think he'd going to get it done in March. But right now he is wrestling just short of an elite level. And Monk is an elite wrestler. My gut says Monk wins this one in a 4-3 type match. Moreno just doesn't have that last gear right now to get these wins. Prove me wrong, Mike!
Iowa State 12 - 7 NDSU

174: In the second best matchup of the night I look for Tanner to separate himself from a mid-teens ranked guy and pick up a convincing win.
Iowa State 15 - 7 NDSU

184: It would be awesome to have Beard back here. If so I look to see him ease his way back in against Julson with a 5-6 point differential. Solid win but no need for anything flashy. If it is Lelund I look for him to pick up a regular decision.
Iowa State 18 - 7 NDSU

197: Jackson has hinted at Gadson having some issues with his shoulder, which would explain how he has wrestled so far this season. If so, I look for Kyven to put on another dominating but close on the scoreboard performance unless some upsets cause the team to need a pin. Probably a 3-1 type decision.
Iowa State 21 - 7 NDSU

HWT This isn't quite "Opperation don't get pinned" level but as long as Perna doesn't get tech falled I'll be content.
Final score prediction: Iowa State 21 - 11 NDSU

If Shayden can make 133 without being dead on his feet that'd be a plus for us. I think he'd win the spot from Bauer. Track has him listed at 141 though.

Hall gets a takedown and two backpoints but not a whole lot of action after that. Hall up 4-1 after the first period.

Scoreless second period. Hall had a nice single leg almost finished but got greedy going for a five point move and Weber got out. 4-1 going into the third, Hall starts down.

Hall wins it 5-3. Was rode most of the third period and gave up a stalling point. We are real bad on bottom.

Iowa State 3 - 0 NDSU

Lots of early acrobatics at 133. Long scramble with both of them almost getting takedowns a few times.

Earl Hall all the potential to be a STUD by the time he's done here. He's young and little greedy sometimes, but he'll learn. He's super talented and his TD defense is awesome.

Bauer down 0-2 after the first. LaValle eventually scored out of the scramble and rode him out.

Yeah, he needs to get more consistent but when he's on he can beat almost anybody.

Bauer gives up an escape/takedown but scores a reversal with short time left. Down 2-5 after the second period.

Damn! Bauer almost caught Lavalle for a five point move but LaValle was able to roll through. Bauer goes down 3-8. Bauer right now is looking a lot like Molina last season. Not the most talent on the team but always fighting.
