NBA: NBA Off-season Thread

I'll wait for the contract details to come out but if there's no early opt out that's a good deal for the Cavs. I figured he'd stay because it made the most sense but he's leaving a boatload of money on the table if that's a true 5 year deal.

As much **** as the Cavs are getting for giving TT $16 million a year, nobody is mentioning how small that KLove deal is compared to if he had taken a LeBron like 1+1 and then maxed out when the cap was way way higher.

@WojYahooNBA: Free agent Paul Pierce has agreed to a three-year deal with the Clippers, league sources tells Yahoo Sports.

There you have it.

Here's how much the Cavs will save from Love signing a 5 year deal instead of waiting for the cap to go up like LeBron is.

Love has Bird rights, so his deal would have been even larger than LeBron's.

This saves CLE $22 million over the last 4 years of his deal. Another $5.25 million per year to spend on other players.

Does Cleveland have a shot at being under the cap next year? It's really just saving tax money going forward, right?

Well, next year it doesn't save them a single penny. But yeah, at least until the cap goes up in 16/17. But they will be aiming to get under the luxury tax number in a couple years to avoid the repeater tax, would be my guess. That number will be much, much higher in 16/17 and an extra $5.25 million would help a lot.

But that's why all the guys they are signing are getting pretty good deals as well.

The only FAs they can sign are their own, so essentially they have to sign their own guys. Minus whoever they trade Haywood for and their $3.5 million exception for taxpayers.

Also, these guys are all going to be signed for 4 and 5 years, and other teams are going to be chasing FAs the next couple years and giving out MONSTER deals, while the Cavs' deals are all using about the $69 million cap number compared to the $86 million other teams will.

Kyrie at 5 years 90 million
Love at 5 years 110 million
LeBron's extension coming without bird rights

Those are all great, great deals considering this new salary cap situation.

I'm not sure how the luxury tax scales, but if it's proportional, the luxury tax will be around $108 million when the cap is $89 million, as opposed to this year when it is $81 million for a $67 million cap.

Fred's not making the Finals with Chicago for at least the next 4-5 years. And Chicago fans will run him out of town if he doesn't. The East will be owned by Cleveland for the foreseeable future.

No question that CHI isn't going to be able to compete with CLE.

If they get to the ECF depends on if Noah is a stiff forever or if he get's back to his old form he had for that one season a couple years ago.

Having Butler locked up is good and he'll be a good #2 to Rose. If Rose can keep doing what he did early on in the Cavs series they will have a chance to win a lot of early round playoff games.

$90M then $108M, they're already at $102M not counting Delly or Haywood's contract for next year, with LeBron's max taking 35% of the cap after this year, they aren't going to be getting under the tax for a long time.

Who says Haywood's deal is going to be traded for a contract that is 3 years long?

And who says Delly will be signed for over two years?

If it's important that they stay under the new, higher luxury tax, they can design deals to do it.

And obviously they'll be able to make trades and dump contracts if they really need to and want to get under the luxury tax for a year.

But the Cavs aren't subject to the repeater tax until after the 16/17 season. That means using the 17/18 cap, which could be about $108 million apparently.

So if the luxury tax scales with the salary cap, the number to get under will be $131 million in 17/18, the year that the Cavs would need to be under.

I could be 100% wrong though, just my understanding of things.

EDIT: Here's how it is determined:

Since it is 53% of the BRI and the salary cap is less than that, as the BRI grows (all the money that is now driving the salary cap up) the luxury tax cap will grow even faster than the salary cap.

[h=4]21. What is the "luxury tax?" Why does it exist? How is it determined? Who pays it?[/h]The luxury tax is a mechanism that helps control team spending. While it is commonly referred to as a "luxury tax," the CBA simply calls it a "tax" or a "team payment." It is paid by high spending teams -- those with a team salary exceeding a predetermined tax level. These teams pay a penalty for each dollar their team salary (with a few exceptions, see below) exceeds the tax level. The tax level is determined prior to the season, and is computed as follows:
  • For 2011-12 the league and players association agreed to use a figure of $70.307 million for the tax level.
  • In 2012-13 the tax level was determined by taking 53.51% of projected BRI (see question number 13), subtracting projected benefits, and dividing by the number of teams in the league[SUP]1[/SUP]. For 2012-13 the tax level was guaranteed to be no less than $70.307 million.
  • Starting in 2013-14 they apply the same formula as 2012-13, except there is no guaranteed minimum.

Good lord. I don't even know what to make of this deal. Yet another first rounder for Philly plus the right to swap with Sacramento in the first round of two other drafts. If the Kings strike out in free agency now that they have the cap room that team is going to be atrocious, and I'm not sold that Rondo, Matthews and Monta Ellis are going to make them that much better anyway. Crazy combustible situation in Sacramento right now. And Sam Hinkie's neverending rebuild continues.

Greg Monroe just picked the Bucks, I hear.

What is going on in NY and LA? Is it arrogance? The story of Aldridge and the Lakers is just amazing. I have to laugh, because it's almost like they're playing checkers while the rest of the league plays chess.

Lakers are trying so hard to close deals, but Kobe is like a dead man walking. He is not helping. Lakers need a Kevin Durant

The next time Kobe asks to be included in a meeting with a prospective FA, they should give him the wrong address.

I'm still a Stauskas believer but man has he had ****** luck when it comes to the teams he has to play for. FA can't come soon enough for him.

Houston had some crazy detailed analytics presentation about Alrdridge's strengths and how they planned to use him offensively and defensively, the Lakers had Kobe tell him they would use him like they used Pau. If you're serious about winning now, you're not picking the Lakers. Seems like just a terrible read of Aldridge's personality focusing on all the off the court stuff in LA when he seems like a pretty low key guy who is serious about playing for a winning team.

I just picture the Philly guys in a conference room talking to Vlade and Rivek and someone saying "ask them to throw in a first" and then Sacramento agreeing to it and everyone in Philly trying not to laugh on the call, then someone else saying "ask them to swap firsts too", Sacramento agreeing again and everyone in Philly trying again not to laugh.

that kobe in the meeting lakers stuff and "use you like gasol" stuff isn't true, LA and DJ confirmed it wasn't themselves.

have they? I just heard they refuted that they had ruled the Lakers out. hadn't heard anything else.

Who knows with LA?

As far as the Knicks go, I think Phil Jackson screwed himself right from the jump by giving Carmelo the big contract. He should have just let him go in free agency and started a full blown rebuild. Bringing back a declining volume scorer makes no sense if you're also going to bring in a rookie head coach and draft long term projects in consecutive drafts. A team can't be in win-now mode and rebuild mode at the same time.
