Signing Dwade to a max deal to make a run with Kobe's corpse for one year would be hilarious.

Then you get the added benefit of Dwade being the new Kobe as he ages into being an overpaid star who doesn't really have much left.

I feel like Wade's camp is trying really hard to get some leverage on Miami, and Riley is watching it all play out and not really that worried about losing him.

Could be but he has a player option, right? I guess he could be going for a long term deal.

Yep for $16M, he wants more though and a long term deal. Miami has all the leverage in this situation and Riley is not going to go into next offseason without being able to throw a max deal at Durant so can't see them opening up the checkbook for Wade.

LeBron seems to be pretty indifferent to Love coming back, saying he won't be trying to re-recruit him, that it's up to Love. Since the Cavs are going to be forced to give Tristan Thompson a max or near max deal, pulling off a sign and trade for some extra perimeter help might actually be the best way to go.

First of all, not all max deals are equal. TT will get a non bird rights max offer from a team and CLE will match it.

This will be cheaper than a max deal that the Cavs would offer themselves.

It would be 4 years $16.875 million (if another team decides to offer him that). The Cavs' max for him would actually be almost $2 million per year more. So it's not really a "max deal" the way most think about it, although it is a lot.

Also, there is no disincentive for the Cavs to resign everyone except for how much money Dan Gilbert wants to pay in tax. It's literally all there is. They'll never get equal value for Love, in a million years.

I could see them trying to creatively dump Varejoa's deal on a rebuilding team, but that would cost them a draft pick probably or maybe Haywards non guaranteed expiring deal.

With TT, Shump, Mozgov, and Smith all being good enough that they want to bring them back, the Hayward trade chip might just turn into a trade exception because that $10 million added to their cap hit might cost Gilbert north of $30 million in taxes.

We'll see.

Also the "LeBron isn't recruiting Love again" story is more of the same BS people just come up with to stir the pot and create buzz/clicks. Why would LeBron tell someone that? It makes no sense.

Here's a great FAQ on the Cavs' offseason options: http://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/3adv99/cleveland_cavaliers_offseason_faq/?ref=search_posts

Here's a chart showing the options they have visually:

I dont know why Lebron would still want Love. Love isn't a star any more. I don't think he ever was, he just played on really bad teams in Minnesota.

The post you responded to said that there are teams that could get him & build a winning team around him. Winning not title, HUGE difference.

Not in the NBA it isn't. You don't necessarily have to win a title but you sure as hell need to compete for one. You don't give away a ton of assets to get a player just so you can win 42 games.

Also in this article, this dude is am absolute joke for this statement:
But as far as what the Cavs’ deficiencies were against the Warriors, I dunno that Kevin Love was the missing piece. Any help he would’ve been on offense would’ve been mitigated by his defensive liability against the intricate Golden State offense.
What Cleveland really needed were extra defensive bodies, and reliable three-point shooters.

Maybe the best stretch 4 in the NBA would've helped with that 3 point shooting?

Agreed. Riley knows what's going on here. No other teams are really that interested in Wade right now, not at least for what Wade wants to be paid.

Riley is not falling for Wade's tactics at this point.

The Timberwolves are my favorite NBA team. Yes, I'm a glutton for punishment.

So, assuming the T-Wolves take Towns tomorrow night, will that be enough to get them over the top?

Yep, and Riley is absolutely going to get in a room with Durant and a max contract offer in hand next summer and there's no way he's giving up that to resign an over the hill Wade to anywhere close to a max deal.

I really, really like the core Minnesota has if they take Towns. Wiggins, Towns, Dieng, Lavine and even Rubio fits in with a nice athletic group of young guys. They also have the rights to the EuroLeague MVP, Nemanja Bjelica. Best case scenario, they play their young guys a ton next year, play really feisty defense but still lose a lot of games because they will be brutal in half court offense, get another high draft pick and free agent shooters and have a nice window to compete in the West starting in 2016.

But then I'm reminded that their in this position almost entirely because of the complete incompetence of their front office and I assume they'll completely screw this up.

To address this absurd Kevin Love discussion, I think a good comparison is Chris Bosh in Toronto vs in Miami.

Bosh averaged 24/11/2.5A/1 block per game his last season in Toronto.
Love averaged 26/12.5/4.4A/.5 blocks per game his last season in Minnesota.

Bosh was taking 16.5 shots per game with 8.4 FTs attempted.
Love was taking 18.5 shots per game with 8.2 FTs attempted.

Now look at year 1 with their "Big 3" with LeBron/Kyrie and Lebron/Wade.

Bosh goes down 3 shots per game to 13.7. He goes down 5 ppg. His FG% is 2.2% lower

Love goes down 6 shots per game to 12.7. He goes down 10 ppg. His FG% is 2.3% lower, his 3 pt% is 1% lower.

However, as LeBron/Bosh/Wade meshed together and Miami put some ok role players together, Bosh eventually got his efficiency up much higher than his first year or even his first 2. He shot 53% and 51% in years 3&4, and brought his 3 pt% up 5% on almost 2 more 3pt shots per game. (Now this past year he's gone up another 4% I think)

Nobody would say that Bosh wasn't worth a max deal while with LeBron and Wade in Miami, and nobody could say any different about Love. Putting new teams together with 3 superstars and a few legitimiately good role players is extremely tough, especially with a first year HC and a bunch of huge mid year trades.

@CYAROB

I think he's a top 12 player in the NBA. And he's probably better than that given his own team to run exactly how he wants. He's worth every penny of the max and not ONE SINGLE TEAM in the entire NBA wouldn't pay him the max right now if they could.

Bosh was also one of maybe five big guys in the whole league that could have made Miami's defensive schemes work, Miami asked him to do a ton of work on that end. Love is a guy you have to scheme to hide defensively.I'd have no problem giving Love a max deal in a vacuum, it's what you have to pay to keep him. In Cleveland's current roster state though, I'm not sure it would be the best use of resources. I wouldn't let him go since they aren't going to have cap space even if he walks but if you can get do a sign and trade for some wing/backcourt depth, I would certainly consider it.

Bosh wasn't that kind of a defender when he first got to Miami.

And CLE is a different team. They have actually good centers that actually can play defense next to Love in Tristan Thompson and Timofey Mozgov.

Bosh's D did get extremely good in the last couple years in Miami though, no doubt. Also there is no doubt that Love is superior in every other category of basketball.

They aren't giving up any resources to keep Love. They can't sign anyone else if they let him go.

A sign and trade? Who are they going to get. And you can't use draft picks, because LeBron isn't letting them do that. He doesn't give a **** about draft picks and he shouldn't at this point. CLE has no reason to wait 4 years for rookies to develop. Especially since they traded Wiggens away.

But you're gonna tell me you are going to trade Kevin Love for depth? For depth? Get out of here with that, it's just absurd. The Cavs have plenty of depth everywhere, it's one of the reasons they're going to have to pay a fortune in luxury taxes.

The only time they don't appear to have depth is when Varejoa, Love, and Irving are all out for the season. That narrative is not applicable to the healthy team they will have next season.
