"No, I am not Georges Niang."I played in the '80s and we had never heard of such a thing so it has been gone for quite a while. I was 31 at home and 31 on the road.
No, I am not Georges Niang.
I think we played about the same time ('85 grad). I think probably some school districts still had older jerseys and continued the practice. I went to a school that was mid sized and we actually got brand new jerseys with our names on the back my sophomore year! I think it being a requirement went out much earlier."No, I am not Georges Niang."
I'm disappointed!
I played early '80s, maybe it ended just after my time OR perhaps only some schools were still doing it (i.e., small schools - I didn't pay attention to numerology outside of our area/conferences).
I'm sure someone more in-the-loop (ex-coaches, officials, sports historians, et al) would know or remember.
Thanks for the research, that info alone is useful. I wondered if it might be conference-by-conference thing.I think we played about the same time ('85 grad). Actually after some research this may have been a rule in some conferences because it appears it wasn't ever a statewide rule.
Sorry if the link doesn't work...
Link fixed.Could get the link to work. Regardless, thanks for the research, that info alone is useful. I wondered if it might be conference-by-conference thing.
The "40" also kinda looks like balls and a **** so maybe 8pm big ****?
I feel like netflix could make a 2 season mystery/documentary about this.
Ok. Just saw Stu fessed up to it. I was pretty close. hahaI actually figured this out.
It's Sheron Dorsey Walker. If you look at the spelling you can see the "S" then it's a "D" and not pm then "W". Not sure why he signed it #40

Awesome, I actually heard this in Keith Morrison's voice in my head as I read it.“The case seemed to be closed, everyone went on with their lives for over two years…the sleepy bedroom community had all but forgotten about the mysterious signature…but then a stranger wandered in to town with a chilling story…a story that seemed all most too unbelievable to be true. Eyebrows were raised on Main St., ears perked up in the local bars…was the end really the end? Or was this just the beginning?”
I remember this up to the late 90s early 00’s in the metro even.I think we played about the same time ('85 grad). Geez laweez. There are like 6 NBA guys on this roster only to get smoked by UVA in the Sweet 16. Helluva year that I will never forget tho.I don't see a #40 from that season on scholarship.

Wes Greder (a walk-on) was #4 but no sign of a #40.

I try to forget that game…thanks a lot…If you think getting smoked by a #1 seed in the Sweet Sixteen was bad...

Surprised we had to play a #1 seed in the Sweet 16 with 6 nba guys on our team….we should’ve been a 1 or 2 seed with that much talent is all.

Well done. You have potential!“The case seemed to be closed, everyone went on with their lives for over two years…the sleepy bedroom community had all but forgotten about the mysterious signature…but then a stranger wandered in to town with a chilling story…a story that seemed all most too unbelievable to be true.
