In the NCAA players can only have digits 0-5 in their numbers so that refs can signal their fouls with two hands, one hand for the first digit and the other hand for the second digit (if needed).

Apparently years ago in Iowa high school basketball schools had one set of jerseys (home, I think) that had all even numbers and then the other set that were all odd for the road. A player might wear 1 at home and 2 on the road. That way officials could signal a foul with absolutely no confusion as to who it was on since there was a unique number on every player that played in the game.
I always wondered why I wore one number under my warmup while sitting on the bench for home games and a different number under my warmup while sitting on the bench for away games. Also, I used to sneak candy onto the bench because I sat on the bench for home and away games.

Your options for #40:

Mark Currie, 2008
Ross Marsden, 2006-07
Dave Braet, 2004-05
Brad Davis, 2000-01-02
Klay Edwards, 1996-97-98-99
Loren Meyer, 1995
Fred Hoiberg, 1994
Morgan Wheat, 1993
Darryl Spinks, 1986-87-89
Ron Harris, 1981-82-83-84
Paul Landsberger, 1977
Dale Smith, 1975-76
Robert Wilson, 1974
Tom O’Connor 1972-73
William Wantiez, 1964-65-66
Marvin Straw, 1962-63
So I went down this road.

I had to look up Dale Smith to see if ISU had it's very own Dale from Waterloo. But alas, Dale Smith was from Jefferson. However, there was an Evan Varley on his team from Menlo so it seems that Clint was a legacy. I did not know this.

Did you tell him you followed his Friar career. We need more Fenwick talent. Don't know why we don't try to recruit Chicago area more in most sports.ISU has a lot of sports alums from there.
