Ouch. Penn State 2027 Recruiting Decline?

I’m not sure how much I believe him but Campbell is insinuating that he had no intention of taking any players with him but felt he had no choice when ISU decided not to promote from within for the next head coach.

I struggle to buy the idea that Campbell didn't know what the replacement plan was. His buyout has been low for quite a while, it was always known this was a possibility. Yet Campbell and Pollard never talked about it?

So you believe that the talent we get at ISU is equal to that of what PSU gets? He took the best we had, added to what was still at Penn State and they are going to be good.
This idea that he will struggle to recruit there is crazy, you are at a name school with plenty of money. He will recruit as well as Franklin did or better.
Didn’t say that. I said he lost to a terrible Colorado team with the same talent that mostly followed him to Pedo St. I don’t follow their recruiting so don’t know who they have added. I’m sure he’ll get better recruits than he did here but we’ve also seen him lose to teams with less talent than us before

Like 2021. Such inferior talent.
That team was overrated anyway. It was a bunch of guys that had a good season in the covid year. In retrospect it had a ton of issues. Purdy's turnovers, the offensive line, lack of WR's, and guys like Mike Rose showing his all-American status the prior year was a fluke. That team wasnt that great. The preseason rankings was a joke. It was at best a team ranked 20-25. How many NFL guys were on it? I dont know why people refuse to believe the COVID season didnt actually meant something. It was like an NFL team the strike year bragging about their success. Its not like the Oregon team we beat in the Fiesta Bowl was even good. They were 4-3 ffs. And im old enough to remember when Purdy played at ISU. Half the people on this board couldnt wait for him to be gone. Their record that year was way more realistic about the kind of team that was than the year before.

I would say talent wise, ISU was in the bottom half of the conference for most of Campbells time here. That will not be the case at Penn. State. ISU has placed 26 players currently in the NFL, Penn State is at 59, so twice as many as we have, when you have that much talent is going to be easier to play poorly and still win the game.

I think the fact we had some good skill position guys makes it easy for people to forget the deficiencies those teams did have. Im amazed guys like Montgomery and Hall ran for the yeards they did because the line was piss poor for most of Campbell's tenure in Ames.

Texas A&M and FSU beg to differ on that one

That is the crux of the thread. Can CMC actually get those guys to come to his team and buy in? The good news this year is he should win 10 games and be able to sell winning, the bad news is that if those 4/5 stars don’t want to buy into what he’s selling at PSU. I think the recruiting will be a lot better in 2027 after a winning season

Do a lot of people ask their boss who they would hire to replace them if they left? That seems like a weird conversation to me.

He going to recruit guys that have the same attitude as the guys he recruited at ISU. The only difference is they'll be more talented. These are going to be guys that love football and are willing to work hard year round. Hes not going to change what personal attributes hes looking for in guys.

You listed two of the most disappointing teams in college football. Seems like Ohio State, Oregon and others do very well with roster full of 4 and 5 star recruits. The idea that he will not be able to bring in the highly rated kids and get them to buy into what he is selling is very overrated. Players want to win, and win at a high level. If Campbell can do that, he will get the players.

He doesn't need 5 star kids. It hasn't helped Oregon win a natty and Ohio State seems to underachieve plenty. He just needs to bring in the 4 star guys. Those are the types of guys be can make into 5 star players by their JR or SR year.

Not normal people, but people working strictly on replaceable contracts in the high-profile-sports world would run into that kind of situation. Apparently Campbell had thoughts on it already, as he has now shared. I'd bet Ferentz has shared with his AD what his vision for post-retirement transition is. We've seen guys get elevated up these ladders before.

Saying Ohio State has underachieved plenty is a new one to me but go off my man it’s hot take season!

Have you made it your #1 priority in life to cheerlead for Matt on all internet forums or just here?

Just giving him his due, he left for a better job, something that everyone on here would do. What good does it do to get pissed off about it? Campbell was the best coach we have had at ISU, why crap on him because he left?

Looking at the PS two deep, MC didn’t keep very many proven PS players. There are a few that started last year, but most are unproven underclassmen. Unless Sowell makes a big jump, WR looks like a real weakness. MC didn’t appear to have great luck in the portal outside the ISU guys and a couple DTs. His team looks built to have a lot of close games. We will see if has been able to build a good culture quickly. Honestly, I was disappointed in the talent on his projected two deep.
If their WRs are not better than last year then their passing game is gonna suck. Eskildsen and Sowell had their moments last year but neither were impressive. The TEs are a different story. PSU has had some great TEs. Their fans are gonna love Brahmer. Hansen will do alright there at RB I think. Not sure if any of the o-line transfers will start. Maybe Buhr. Kuol Kuol has potential. It's gonna be weird seeing all of our former players on a different team but I'll watch them to see how they do.

I definitely appreciate the success that CMC brought to our program. I don’t love all the discussion about him now that’s he’s left, but I get that people want to discuss and we’re in the lull before the season starts. It’s just seems a little like ******** about an ex after the breakup…

Anyway, back to the point. Will CMC have issues in his new gig? CMC is pretty stubborn so does he ease up on that? He also never seemed to have an identity on winning games. Was that lack of talent and his mantra of ‘winning in the margins’ would get wins over teams with more talent. Probably. PSU should be getting 4 and 5 star talent and if he gets that I could see him being Saban-like in the sense that it’s no nonsense and they just dominate in all facets.

To your point, his handling of the expectations will also be a huge challenge. Toledo and ISU are nothing compared to what he’s going to face. Fortunately for him, his first season schedule is 10 win capable.

Saban like?

You think PSU wins 10 this year? I know the schedule is pretty weak but that seems like a steep climb for a new HC breaking in a new system at a program that lost half its roster.
