My tailgating screwup or not?

As we finished up pregame tailgating on Saturday and prepared to enter Jack Trice, I decided to not lock up my cooler in the car. Instead, I left it in the tailgating tent, towards the back where it wasn't very visible.

I came out at halftime to enjoy a couple cold ones, and found that my 16 remaining bottles of beer were gone, except for one untouched Michelob Golden Draft Light lying on the bed of ice as a kind of offering.

My question: Was I naive in assuming that other thirsty tailgaters wouldn't immediately sprint to my cooler as soon as I was out of sight?

We always lock our stuff up to error on the side of caution.

Sorry to hear it, but yes. 55,000 plus people in attendance, you have to assume at least one is going to be an *******.

Thats really a bummer, sorry that happened. We always have someone at our tailgate that isn't going into the game or we lock everything up, but I'd still like to think we wouldn't have to.

I must be in the minority but I'm more trusting and think I'd be fine leaving them behind and putting my trust in people, which obviously is the wrong answer.

I always leave mine out in the open but we also have larger tailgates where at least 4-5 people stay in the lots during the game.

Never leave anything out and assume if you do that it won't be there when you get back. Unfortunately there are people that can't respect other people's property and just leave it alone. The only thing I will ever leave out is a grill that has not cooled off enough as a cheap grill isn't worth enough to me if it stolen than having my car and others catch on fire.

ISU fans are known for their kindness, unfortunately that seems to go out the window after a few beers. Had my cooler rifled through when I left it at a donor tent last year. Asked the kid what he was doing and he just pretended that he thought it was his.

Damned kids.

The main reason I purchased an ambulance for tailgating is due to a full cooler plucked out of the back of my buddies truck. Took all the coors light and a bottle of 3 year old blackberry brandy (not that I was too worried about the brandy but was mad I had to go and buy a new cooler). Now I can lock everything up pretty easily before going into the game.

We put everything away, as we have had literally anything and everything stolen after leaving them in our tent. A few weeks ago a bunch of grade school and junior high kids came to our tent and helped themselves to chips and cookies and tried to get pop and gatorades out of coolers. It was like their parents told them to wander around and help themselves.

What kind of beer was stolen?

Alcohol laying around unguarded on a college campus? Nah, it should be safe

laying around, or in a cooler, sitting in the back of a truck? Seems like those are very different scenarios where each scenario is equally illegal.
