Metronet vs Mediacom

I had metronet installed last week. It has been working fine, however I am not able to get the full 500/500 speed when connected to wifi. It does get the full speed when testing it by hardwiring to the modem. Are others able to get the full speed through wifi? The metronet tech support guy says it will always be a range using wifi.

Also, when using metronet, Chrome browser displays "This site can't be reached" momentarily before loading websites and other apps aren't able to find internet connections. When I tried switching back to mediacom to test, it works fine. Has anyone experienced this?

Metronet tech support hasn't helped at all.

Thanks for the help, I am not really technical when it comes to this stuff.
Is it even possible to get full speed on wifi? I didn't think so at least. There's going to be a drop off. Even with the best service you'll be lucky to even come close hard wired.

Have had mixed results after converting to Metronet. Much more reliable than Mediacom - no more 5 minutes outages every 3 hours but speeds... dunno.

So if I'm not doing a phone line, and live in a ranch house, do you really think that I would need a Google mesh, or would I be fine with what they supply, since that is part of the $9.95 price?
Prior to Google Mesh I had a decent router and a couple additional extenders, night and day difference with mesh. Much stronger and consistent thought the whole house and even most of my yard.

Just got Metronet hooked up last week, and it was down for 7 hours today. The gentlemen from Metronet assured me that this was a rare thing. I sure hope so!

FWIW I haven’t had any outages in 7 months or whatever it’s been.

So an update on Metronet since we got it installed. Have had 3 different outages

What package do you have with them? I would be having them out to check your service with those speeds even with their lowest 200MB package that is not good so either they did not splice your fiber correctly or a piece of hardware is not configured or functioning correctly. Here is a test I just ran on my 500 MB service and I pretty much get close to the full 500 MB every time I test.

We have had 2 outages last several hours and 1 for maybe 30 minutes since we signed up so I am hoping that is not going to be the norm. Still have my CenturyLink as a fall back I have not canceled yet till they show me they are going to be stable. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt right now that it's growing pains from adding a bunch of new subscribers on a newly installed network as these outages haven't been localized but usually affects all of Iowa when they happened. Other than that I am loving the speed compared to my 20MB DSL I had. No other fiber options in my neighborhood and I will never use Mediacom so hoping the outages we had are rare and won't be the norm.

Had Metronet for a couple of weeks now. A couple of outages at the beginning but not lately. I really hope this works out as I do not want to go back to Mediacom! Also, getting use to YouTube Tv, it is not as bad as I thought it would be and I can get channel 5 when I want to!

I was thinking of getting Metronet. I have CenturyLink now which is just awful. I need the fiber optics of Metronet or Mediacom. I was thinking of going with the 500 mbps Metronet plan. Is it better to go with the WholeHome Wifi or just the regular plan? I think it is a 6 dollar difference a month. I believe the only difference is the Extender. Right now, they are promoting it at 64.95 a month plus taxes and the tech fee. I probably don't need 500, but there doesn't appear to be much of a price difference between 200 and 500.

We've had Metronet flags in our yard for several weeks now. I'm waiting for the giant disruption that everyone else seems to be getting.

I really like Mediacom and have all my own equipment. But I'm going to at least consider changing.

So our Mediacom is bordering on unusable this week. In their defense, they have a temp line running across some driveways that is probably the culprit. In their offense, it's been like this for 5 or 6 months now.

Anywho, are people still happy with Metronet?

I still want to maintain using my own router, switches, wireless AP's and such. And understand they don't offer any discount for that.

Also, has anyone had any issues with needing Static IP's? I do a little bit of VPN'ing in, but don't want to have to pay another $10/mo for static IP if I don't have to.

I just got MetroNet installed today. I now have 200Mbps compared to 40Mbps with Centurylink.

They gave me an Eero wifi-system but I already had google nest mesh system. I preferred to to keep the google system so I'm returning the Eero. The bad news is that I still have to pay the $10 tech fee without the Eero wifi.

I saved $5 a month going paperless for my bill pay.

I had a 4 puck Google Wi-Fi (Series 1) that I was pretty happy with. I'm now using the Eero Pro wi-fi plus one additional puck that I bought from BB and my coverage is as good as my old Google system.

We were exceeding our promised max speeds on Mediacom for a few weeks back when Metronet appeared in Ames and ran tons of specials. Once it was clear that Metronet wasn't doing apartment buildings, and slowed down the specials, our speed cut by 75%.

It's still fast and satisfactory, but I've seen what we can do here via wifi.

My part of town is under construction for Metronet. Out of nowhere, Mediacom emails to tell me they're increasing our speed, free of charge, apparently out of the kindness of their hearts. Funny how that works.

I don't know if you are one of the folks on MC that has constant issues like some do in various areas but if Metronet is around the same or less than what you pay for MC I'd recommend the switch. Our 500 MB service has been rock solid and Fiber will always be > than cable internet service. I switched from CenturyLink and it has nothing to do with their service as we rarely ever had an outage or issue with CL but they just could not touch the speeds that Metronet has. If CL ever runs fiber into my neighborhood I'd probably consider going back if the pricing is good but I have been very pleased with the upgrade we made going to Metronet fiber.

Mediacom has got to be hemorrhaging customers locally.

Got the same email from Mediacom yesterday. They weren't generous enough to increase the datacap though.

Out of curiosity, what speed were you at, and what are they bumping you to? I was 100, going to 200. Honestly, with rare exceptions, 100 has been fine, even with two teens and a ton of devices.

How generous of them, glad I dumped them when Metronet came to my neighborhood. I still get mail from them 2-3 times per week.

I will say that once we cut the cord and went internet-only with Mediacom, I've had virtually no complaints. The bill stays the same and the service has been fine, other than the two days they cut us off once because another customer canceled and they accidentally turned off the wrong house at the box.
