It spreads with or without the mask. How often to people touch their mask, and then touch a door knob or handle. Or a glass. Then somebody else touches it. Then they pull their mask down and itch their nostril or pick their nose. Or rub their eyes? Or they take off their mask and then chew on a nail. Are people constantly sanitizing their hands or washing? What about debit card swipers. The buttons? What about gas pumps? Because I'm not seeing it that often. I mean, like every time, are they sanitizing?

Worry more about keeping your hands clean before you touch any part of your face or eat anything.

The trial didn't test the reason for wearing a mask in the first place. It's to protect others, not the wearer. Growing evidence suggests mask mandates do in fact work. Mandating masks is a low impact and effective means of mitigation.

Not if masks make the spread worse by aerosolizing viral particles and making people feel too safe so they don't social distance. Not to mention other negative side effect I mentioned in an earlier post. If you think they work, that's fine, wear them. I don't have a problem with private stores, shops, etc requiring them. I have a problem with public officials requiring them and organizations like the CDC claiming they help protect the wearer when we now know that's not the case.

I haven't read every post in the thread, but recent posts seem to be discussing a scientific study assessing whether masks work (which is not political). Clearly it is only one study though.

getting tired of hearing about 90% - 95% effective covid vax. these numbers are just press releases pumping chest about how good.... not peer reviewed studies. who did they give this to? how many people? what is the age range?

I wish the media and general public had a better scientific understanding....

It will be very interesting to see such information updated in a month or two (it would also be great to see it for other states). I hope the fatality rate has still plummeted. If the healthcare system collapses for a time in some states, the fatality rate may well increase a bit.

I posted the results of a randomized controlled trial. I think that's newsworthy.

I finally opted out of the cave today because some of the topics and way people are talking and treating each other there lately just disgusts me. Not even a full day in without seeing the cave posts already is refreshing to see there are still some people around capable of being decent human beings and not posting garbage like that.

It depends who you listen to, but yes, this study appears to say that they are not effective at preventing the mask wearer from getting sick, but it does not appear to assess their effectiveness in protecting those around the mask wearer (unless I missed it). Edit- I did miss it, effective at protecting others from the mask wearer.
