Matt Campbell sounds off on NCAA

Saw a video on Facebook of Campbell talking about this and then Ferentz. KF said he's in favor of the ruling, and that camps should only be conducted by your school's regular football staff (i.e., no outside/"celebrity" guest coaches).

Kirk jelly of coach Mac and the forthcoming power shift.

It actually says nothing in there about "donating" their time. Another site put out the question of camps that are for charity that the ncaa has backed for years. Does the ncaa have a leg to stand on if the coaches aren't being paid was the question. If all proceeds from incoming monies was going to a specific charity, would it be ok?...things like that.

Good point. Seems like it would hinge on what does and doesn't constitute other coaches being "employed".

coach at historically terrible football program getting the type of recruits that normally would never go to said university, goes after NCAA.

This should end well.

The guy has a value system and it doesn't really matter who is the devil, he is not going to fake it. CMC will find some other angle and get ISU out to kids in the south. The evil empire may win right now, but the insurgency never rests! HAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAHAAAAA!

I had trouble posting my response for the first time. Coincidence or is it!:realmad::shocked:

Spoken by Ferentz on a day when they have a scrimmage at Valley High School ... but that is so different!

I am just as ****** at the Big 12 over this as I am at the NCAA. Just another reason I hate the conference we are sentenced to be in.

I've heard this a little bit talked about, but the thing that angers me is that Bob Bowlsby chaired the subcommittee on this, and the Big 12 voted to ban the satellite camps too. :realmad:

So glad we're in this conference.

It might suck, but reality is, if Iowa St isn't in the Big 12, they're probably in the MAC.

Not a truthful answer if you ask me. He isn't worried about the HS kids he is worried about being able to recruit and get the best kids he can to ISU. And going to camps with Michigan, OSU etc helps him do that. Because let's face it. This isn't about giving kids instruction from coaches, it's about trying to get a leg up recruiting wise.
To me if you really want to help your ability to recruit and also help the kids let them take official visits their junior year. Getting the kids on your campus there is a much better chance of you getting them than talking to them at a satellite camp.

It's easier to get kids that don't have the money to travel from Texas to ISU to come to a local satellite camp. The main issue is some kids can't afford to travel to unofficial visits or camps hosed at said school. Satellite camps allows those kids to participate because the camp comes to them.

I am not naive to think there isn't incentive for the schools but I think the kids get more out of it than the coaches.

Also, the way I read the ruling made me think that coaches from say Michigan and ISU could team up and rent let's say North Texas's facility to hold a camp. Or they could team up with North Texas to host a camp.

Recruiting is certainly part of it. Getting kids in on official visits in their junior year would be great. But a kid can't take an official visit to your school if they don't know you exist or an inkling of how you coach, how you are as a person, etc. Kids get 5 official visits. I'd wager that 99% of kids on officials have met at least one member of the coaching staff in person. They aren't going to waste officials on programs they're not at least somewhat considering seriously. And they likely cannot afford an out of pocket unofficial visit. That is one reason why coaches like these camps.

Imagine a kid from a poor family who can hold his own on the football field, and him getting a scholarship to play in college is the only way his parents can afford to send him to college. He's in a small town in Georgia and not getting any love from Georgia, GT, SC, UF, FSU, Alabama, or Tennessee and his only offers are some partial lower division scholarships, still leaving his family struggling to look at the finances. A school like Iowa State, Michigan, Boston College, etc., hold a camp in the area and see this kid excelling all over the field and slip their name into his mind. They send a coach to his school to watch him play in the fall and invite him in for an official and eventually a full scholarship. Sounds like a pretty damn good deal for the athlete and the school.

This. Totally. This.

This ban isn't going to stick. Too many players are speaking out against this for the NCAA to rubber stamp this. There might be regulation, but I don't see the ban sticking because there is absolutely no positives for the prospective student athletes.

People need to realize the NCAA didn't do this. Conferences voted this in. The NCAA didn't just make a mandate. They can, however, make this right if their purpose is truly to help student athletes. The things these camps were going to do for recruits was invaluable. There are a ton of kids every year that would get opportunities they wouldn't have otherwise gotten from these things and there is no debate about that.

I'm not naive enough to think it's not about recruiting but you're still wrong as far exposure in general. It's not even about the ISU recruiting base. It's about kids who could go to Eastern Michigan that otherwise wouldn't have had the opportunity. Also, contrary to popular belief, a lot of these camps are useful from an instruction point of view. Look at SMSB. That camp brought a ton of recruits to the surface. Yeah, maybe they didn't end up at a BCS school but there are a bunch of lower level schools that take part in that camp that find other guys that wouldn't have had an opportunity.

As for the bolded, there isn't anything he can do about that. It's a stupid rule that should be changed, as you said, but he can't just change it. Besides, if you get to interact with a kid at a camp in June, there's a lot better chance you get him to visit at some other point rather than just ringing him up on the phone.

Anybody have any recent links to Harbaugh comments on this?
