Short of dumping a huge pile of (guaranteed) money on a coach, I'm not sure how you can attract someone good.

"Mr. (Prospective Coach) - yes, we've only won 6 games in 4 years but we're working on some re-designs of our already-cool white helmets, which should hook some recruits when we put them out on the Twitter."

I like Iowa State Football.....but the older I get, the more I dislike the business of college football and I certainly dislike the business of professional gladiatorial football club entertainment. These dudes get paid what????? I wish I was just a kid trading cards again and picking heroes with the nerf football for 3 on 3 in the yard.

After years of doing it about our own program, i think a lot of ISU fans are conditioned to look for signs of improvement in bad programs that may or may not be actual signs.

How many times did people convince themselves that Rhoads was actually turning things around?

I don't think it's even that. Our program was never at the crap level that Kansas is at.

They had one turnover. They only had 25 yards in penalties. They out-gained us on the ground. They were 7-17 on third down conversions. Their quarterback wasn't good, and being behind the whole game, they had to rely on him more than I would guess they hoped. Compare that to how we looked under Rhoads and MacCarney at the end. Three and out, three and out and put our poor defense back on the field defending a short field. I don't follow recruiting, so I'll take your word for it that he's not setting the world on fire, but that takes time to change, especially with poor facilities and a fickle fan base. My honest opinion after the game was they should be patient and trust the process. I was STUNNED when I read he had been fired. How much progress is it reasonable to expect in three and a half years with such a lack of support? A coaching change will move things backwards and I wouldn't be surprised if they're in a worse position 4 years from now.

We absolutely were. You don’t get to be one of the historically worst teams in all of FBS by not being at Kansas level for a decent amount of time.

Your right. I should have specified that we were haven't been that bad in the last 20 years.

Here's a trip down memory lane to what I believe was the low point: https://www.desmoinesregister.com/s...e-ever-matt-campbell-dan-mccarney/1096696002/ Compare to Kansas today, I'd say we had far worse talent, a worse record (0-10-1), and worse facilities (though it's close). The only place we weren't worse was in fan support. We still drew 35,000 average for the season.

I have a hard time believing that there were 35,000 people in the stands those years. I have memories of having entire rows to yourself. I also remember 4-H games when any 4-Her could get a free ticket. Can you imagine Iowa State giving out hundreds of free tickets now?

Yeah, I think they’re still subconsciously comparing ISU to Kansas or something so they’re trying to legitimize Kansas so they can legitimize ISU. It’s ******* weird though.

If I wasn’t the first person on here calling for Rhoads to be ousted I had to be in the first five. As an Arsenal fan and a staunch Wenger out guy for about 10 years before it finally happened I am of the mindset to always err in the side of canning that ass before I keep giving them “one more year” because that turns in to two-three-four more years real fast and then you’re ******.

I mean, we shut out Texas in Rhoads's last year. You remember the bad but there were definitely flashes of things that were good, just as with Kansas. That doesnt mean that the program as a whole is headed the right way.

They're in year 4, their recruiting is in shambles. One commit for next year.

I mean hell, they still lost to an FCS team this year. Even if Nicholls is an above average FCS team, one thing we have in common is that deep down you know that if you're still losing to FCS teams 4+ years any talk of a turnaround is questionable. How much progress is reasonable to expect? More than current. Theyve got 3 wins, but theyre over 2 programs that have a combined 2-16 record and TCU which is pretty poor right now as well.

They honestly probably should have fired him last year based on results, but after having such quick triggers on Weis and Gill they were almost forced to wait it out so that the next coach would be sent the message 'we'll give you the time needed'

With Mac and Rhoads the trend was bad and getting worse. Iowa State LOOKED like a poorly coached team, especially on offense. Yesterday, Kansas looked like a well-coached team that was just over-matched. They had a couple of dropped passes as well, one of which would have been a touchdown. It's nearly impossible to build a winning program with that level of fan support. Facility improvements? Where's the money coming from? Big name coach? Where's the money coming from? Recruiting? Who wants to go play in an empty stadium?
No, that KU team didn't look any better than the worst Rhoads team or any the Mac teams other than 2003. It's improvement because 1. They were so brutally awful the last two years, like embarrassingly, no pride terrible 2. They are a senior laden team and 3. They are getting wins by playing a terrible non-con and got TOs at a completely unsustainable pace. They are a very bad team and are losing 11 starters, and have NO recruiting class. Realistically, with the experience, schedule, crazy TO games, this is about as close to the planets aligning for KU right now. With all that they are going to win 3-4 games and have a loss to an FCS school.

I think KU had a presser tonight. I wonder what the plan is?
