Kempt

Kyle Kempt is the man! Go Kempt!!

I'm seeing a lot of mentions about drops, but for the most part, I saw pass break ups on Saturday rather than drops. I'm sure most of those go as "passes defended" rather than drops. Some of that probably had to do with where the ball was placed (I think that last pass to Butler was slightly behind him, which allowed the defender to break it up).

So let me see if I have this figured out on the 2017 Cyclone Football timeline.

At the beginning of the year, we were concerned if Matt Campbell was a Big XII coach and feared he may be in over his head.

After the Iowa game, we compared our defense to a Class 4 high school team.

After Texas, we wanted Manning reassigned to Oline only and let Campbell take over as OC since his job was now in jeopardy and we could let him choose his fate.

After Oklahoma, we needed to lock Campbell up to a long term contract because Herbstreit said he is gone. If we lose Campbell then Pollard needs fired.

After Kansas, Kempt is exactly what this team needs, a game manager who makes few bad decisions and lets the playmakers make plays. Manning understands his players and is a very good coordinator.

After Texas Tech, if we do infact lose Campbell, Heacock should be our next head coach, he's a genius.

After TCU, it's fate we're going to be Big XII champs and is it possible to get in the Playoffs?

Vegas tabs WVU as -3.5 favorites. Cyclones go on the road to an always tough environment and lose by 4.......... and here we are, questioning the decision of our quarterback, offensive coordinator, and saying our playmakers cant make the plays when they count.

Love it.

Lets also remember is that the guy is in year 2 as an OC, so he is really learning on the job. His work developing OL at Toledo was great, and considering the hand he was dealt with the OL last year I thought he did a great job making that unit serviceable. As poor as the run blocking has been, pass protection has been very good.

The run blocking also doesn't look bad as in just a complete mess--they look well coached and where to be, angles, etc., I just think it comes down to physical ability/size and those are out of the coaches' hands.

I DO like how they keep trying to run it. Montgomery is still a threat at any time.

I wonder if a far outside pitch in some form wouldn't be more effective; ISU's receivers are generally very good at blocking on their end.

They've done a quick outside option pitch this season with some success.

I'd still like to see more screens to DM to get him in space with more blockers in front of him.

Glad we have Kempt, he's won games for us.
But when he keeps the ball, it looks like he's running in pudding and just wants to drop before contact....not helpful from the 1 yard line.
In hindsight, this game felt like the Texas game.
There for the taking, but the offense left me head scratching my head.

LOL, reminds me of the Scrubs episode

Elliot: Why don't you just try a higher gear?
J.D.: It's like pedaling in hummus!

I've loved his play so far. He had a rough start today, but passing came around.

HOWEVER...he has the type of foot mobility and elusiveness that only the extremely elderly and quadriplegics could envy.

That the coaching staff was somehow unaware of that to the point we tried to run him 3 times...seemingly on purpose...is............troubling.

Hell, I only needed to see it once to realize that it was a bad idea and should only done when literally no other option existed.

He made Peyton Manning look like Usain Bolt.

Kempt didn't lose the game for us on Saturday. Spotting WVU 20 in their house didn't help our cause at all.

Now Kempt didn't shoulder the team and lead us to a win either. But that's really not his style.

What is the defense supposed to do? The plays they scored on were not good defense but they held them 20pts below their average. Kempt doesn’t have to be great but the offense has to give us something. They didn’t really do that Saturday. The offense needs to score at least 20 this Saturday. We can’t expect the defense to hold OSU below that.

The standard has been raised. The defense gives up a season low 20 pts to one of the best offenses in the country and it needed to "step up."
We get to wring our hands and complain that our offense led by a walk on QB and OC in his second year in the role at any level had 350 yards but was inefficient in the red zone.

Campbell, you magnificent bastard, you have indeed raised the standard.

They've done it off an option look but if you do that with Kempt I think the only hope may be the defense falls over in shock that someone thinks it will work. I mean, they could assign the back side corner to him and still give up 2 yards if it's blocked perfectly.

People get caught up in box score watching and/or have not been paying attention. Yesterday we saw the same team as the previous 4, we just lost. That’s what happens when you have a small margin for error due to poor run blocking and limited QB play. A few different bounces/whistles/etc and it’s a win. It’s a credit to this staff that we normally get those things to go our way often enough to win, but it’s not a different team when they don’t.

I think it was a "different" team this past Saturday than the one of the previous 4 games. The team this past Saturday was extremely tentative and passive for nearly the first two quarters. The team this past Saturday was dropping catches that they were making in those previous games. The team this past Saturday was very undisciplined on defense for the first half. Passive play calling...like the choice to not go for a TD in 4th quarter.

I do agree that ISU has a small margin for error. In October, the errors were minimized. That wasn't the case on Saturday. Maybe it was listening too much to the media reports about how bad WVU was on defense, or how WVU was banged up on offense, or putting too much credence in ISU's top 15 ranking. It seemed to me that the mental preparation wasn't there, and the intensity level didn't come back up until it was too late.

Regarding the passing game...Saturday (and this has been commented on in other threads), there were several occasions where WVU corners were backing off the receivers at the snap (leaving a big cushion). ISU has to make them pay for that. Instead, many times passes were thrown into a rather "busy" middle of the field. I don't know if that is the QB missing a read, or the offense just doesn't have an audible of some kind to deal with that scenario.

Yeah, I think it's probably just that, an option look, because they've pitched it every time. Probably just trying to find a way to get it to DM on a pitch and hoping he makes something of it.

I don't see Kempt keeping it in the future either on that play.

I wonder how much of that slow start has to do with the road trip to Morgantown. Everything I've heard about that trip is that it straight up sucks. Fly into Pittsburgh, then bus to Mogantown. It is likely to take something out of any visiting team, which is why WVU was favored in the first place over a ranked team.

I do think the playcalling was a little tentative and it seemed we played like we had something to lose.

This was one week where the team just didn't respond to adversity quite as well as in previous weeks. The blown coverage at the start of the game was just completely uncharacteristic.

Could be. Campbell's first time making that trip from Ames...

Regarding the betting line, certainly home field advantage figured into that, but I would speculate there was some "ISU isn't really for real" going on there as well...

Kemnpt underthrew Ryen and Lazard. Both would have been touchdowns if he hits them in stride.

With that said...both catches should have been made. Ryen's hit him in the hands and he didn't reel it in. Lazard's was tougher but he needs to make that catch if he wants to play on Sunday and he had a chance to secure it but didn't.

The WRs have made plays in our big wins. They didn't on Saturday. That is a big difference. You beat a team over the top a couple of times and the defense loosens up.

Our OL are not good in screens. I am very frustrated at the lack of WR screens.
