He might be willing to coach again, but I'm not sure anyone would take him. His stint at ISU was disastrous, and at times it looked like the game had passed him by.

You could be rite that the game has passed mangino by...Having said that it is sad that mark mangino who really exploited the no huddle and passing 1st then running the ball 2nd ....could end up like this .......

Leach, Dykes, Briles, Meyer...there's a handful of spread offense guys who have survived and thrived by changing and tinkering within their systems. But I think Mangino was stuck squarely in 2008. Everything he ran, defenses had already seen. Combine that with his inability to get on the same page with Rhoads, and I think he's done in the coaching field.

Did rhoads ever have a offensive coordinator who was on the same page as roads er rhodes er rhoads...lol

I think NOT......If ISU ever hires another defense coordinator as head coach.......It will be a sad day.....

I think this is true. I think it also helped that he coached in the old big 12. His KU teams were never a world beater. He just had a few great draft picks, above average players and missed the big boys in conference. they dropped to 5-7 once those players left.


On a side note, does anyone read HCS ever? I tried to get into it because they cover big 12 sports and I liked the idea of a sports website that just focused on the big 12. I just couldn't get past their heavy bias towards Oklahoma schools and Texas schools. Not everything is bad but I remember they rated Iowa State of having the worst mascot because there wasn't hurricanes in Iowa. I think they also rated KU low because Jayhawks aren't a real bird. while true that isn't the reason for the name.

The problem with the 2009 game and how it's remembered here is the fact that KU was going to have more than a minute to work with....and ISU had no answer for their WRs Mieier and Briscoe. Or Jake Sharp turns invisible somehow, and gets crazy wide open on a toss out to the flat and runs for 50 yards. Happened in the 08 game leading to their 1st score.

ISU exposed some of KU's issues for all to see, but ISU wasn't likely to win that game in 09.

Overall he's very complimentary to the ISU fans ("best in the world"), and very complimentary to Jamie Pollard. But he said a couple times that it was a far different program than any he'd ever seen. Odd...

I'd imagine it has something to do with how a head coach at a D1 program should have at least some idea of what they want to do besides 'hit 'em coming off the bus'.

I think he knew what he wanted to do and it would have worked if it wasn't something Mangino didn't know how to do. He painted himself in a corner when he promoted Messngham rather than Sturdy and then once he fired Mess, I think he knew it wouldn't go over well if he promoted from within even though that was probably the best option. I was a big fan of Sturdy and I thought he should have been kept on this staff as well but I completely understand going the route they did and I think it's worth it to give Manning the role if that's what it takes to keep him as your OL coach.

We were beating them 20-0 at halftime and they were ranked. Of course we blew it, but I think they may have lost out after that.

Exactly. The million dollar question was regarding the "environment". Was he talking about the President, AD, CPR, donors? Too bad the interviewer didn't go there.
