JTS Improvements - Want More

So... Being the rube that I am, I took it upon myself to call ISU and ask about B5.

They basically said, it will be blocked off from tailgaters for the rest of this season. They indicated that some ISU staff might park there for now. It sounds like it will be wide open for kiddos to throw a football around or something like that, but I guess we will see next week for sure what will happen. She didn't seem to have all the details, but she was pretty adamant that no tailgating donors will be using it for the time being.
My initial reaction was, if they had wanted to monetize that lot, they’d have had the contract state that it be finished before the Iowa game.

In regards to the conversation of some development adjacent to the RV lots if the University gets back some of the golf course leased land, is there anything they could do to make the RV area something that would be used and generate revenue in the late spring and summer?

If they put in the infrastructure for water and waste in some of the spots, an adjacent vehicle lot (that could also be sold as a tailgating lot for game days) , and maybe a building with bathrooms (possibly including showers) and some common space of climate controlled seating and perhaps a supplies/convenience store element. Would that be something that gets used in the off season or it wouldn't be worth the up front and administrative cost?

I think there is a possibility of this happening, not sure how likely, but at least possible. But with CyTown other events through the summer could happen. Think like music performances, conferences, festivals, concerts, flea market and swap meet type things etc all could be done in the area. Not to mention things like Special Olympics etc that are already there.

These things would increase the foot traffic and income potential for CyTown, as well as major income potential for parking and RV lots and hotels.

There are some obvious things that make this not exactly something the University wants to deal with too, but in the future the need to generate as much money as possible makes these ideas at least possible.

The first and biggest fight would be which University department would "get" the land.

That's my thinking, CyTown being walking distance (with Jack Trice Way being the only road that needs to be crossed) once completed would make it a more desirable spot to camp on a non-game weekend than it is now. Could be a win/win for both generating some additional revenue for the athletic department and a positive for CyTown with more people around that area in the summer.

I can't imagine it being anyone other than either athletics or Rec Services. And it feels like the athletic department and Rec Services have worked together to both accomplish things in recent years (if memory serves, those two departments did a land swap in the last decade or so).

I thought the swap failed as Rec Services passed on taking over the SW Rec Complex from Athletics in favor of building their new(ish) facilities along University?

If you're going to pie-in-the-sky it, start at the south end and convert the old golf holes into a 9-hole Executive/Par 3. Then, use whatever's left on the north end as dual-use parking (course, and football gameday).

This is accurate. Athletics wasn't willing to field turf and light the SW complex so Rec Services could maintain the same level of service with a smaller footprint. The math didn't work for anyone. This would have been around 2010 or so.

That swap didn’t end up happing, but didn’t Athletics give Rec Services land north of Lincoln Way, the former women’s soccer field and maybe the land directly to the south as well. I can’t remember exactly what Athletics got in the trade.

Wasn't that for the Cyclone Sports Complex?

Planting trees around the MacFarland lot. I’m not sure that all of the spacing will go over well with some tailgaters.

Those are really close together, seems like that will just make it harder to mow/maintain. Almost looks like it's been done to prevent tailgating on the grass.

Friend of mine just made this on his laser and gave it to me today. He lives by Dubuque and used to work with Konrardy's parents. He is thinking about making one for them.

edit: notice SEZ closed-Sukup, grass knolls and elevated walkway on NEZ, new videoboards. NICE!
Sounds like your friend could make some money on ETSY selling these.

Nothing that a chainsaw can't take care of. The electric ones are quieter, too. Just sayin.

I tailgated in that grass area this past weekend and it was perfect. Disappointed to see they added trees that close together.

While I have thought our current press box is small. One question I have had for those who want a larger box with suites is "How much would they cost and do we currently have a waiting list for people who want one". You need demand before you spend big bucks to build suites.
